Can anyone recommend some good books for me to read to 7yo DD please?

She's loved the Roald Dahls and Enid Blytons, but now I'm at the end of what I can remember from my own childhood!

Shes a good reader herself and has the rainbow magic etc, but this is for me to read to her. She's not quite ready for Harry Potter etc yet, she doesnt like trouble/scary in a book (wont let me read The Witches etc)...

My son loves the Rory Branagan books by Andrew Clover. Think there's 5/6 now.

Pippi Longstockings
Swallows and Amazons
Narnia books

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/08/2023 20:52

Jacqueline Wilson books?

BadgerFace · 19/08/2023 20:53

My 7 year old loves David Walliams at the moment (although I think they are awful and don’t really enjoy reading them to her - I’d like to go back to Isadora Moon!)

BadgerFace · 19/08/2023 20:54

Septimus Heap is a good precursor to Harry Potter. Magic but not scary!

bluechameleon · 19/08/2023 20:55

Some series my 5 and 8 year olds like: The Boy Who Grew Dragons, The Worst Witch, Leonora Bolt, Flat Stanley, The House That Sailed Away.

booktokbear · 19/08/2023 20:55

Also:

Onjali Rauf - all of the books!

Dogman and Catkid books

Matt Haig - Evie and the Animals

Sarah Lean - The Good Bear

Katherine Randell - all of the but he especially loved Rooftoppers and Hood Theives

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 19/08/2023 20:56

DD liked Amelia Fang and Rainbow Grey - same author.

booktokbear · 19/08/2023 20:56

Katherine Rundell that should say (blinking autocorrect)

Also there are 7 Rory Brannigan books now.

DS2 is 7…we’ve recently read:
Narnia
The Dragon in the Library and sequels
The Borrowers
Children of Greene Knowe
The Armourer’s House (a childhood favourite of mine by Rosemary Sutcliffe)
Toto the Ninja Cat

Agree with rainbow grey and Amelia fang. My dd loves the adventurers series which is like a modern day famous five.

The ickabog was a good one at 7 too.

Grimwood books by nadia shireen are hilarious. Also the worst witch series is good for that age.

MrsW9 · 19/08/2023 21:04

The Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones is great. Not as scary/tense as Harry Potter, but wonderfully imaginative, brilliant stories.

MinnieMountain · 19/08/2023 21:05

The Diamond Brothers series.
Mr Gumm.

OpposableThumbs2 · 19/08/2023 21:48

My 7 year old DD likes the Worst Witch. Just started the Famous Five with her.
She reads Isadora Moon to herself.

Thank you all!! I'll get buying 😁

We love Mr Gum here and she is also enjoying the 13 Storey tree house books.

Harebrain · 20/08/2023 17:46

The Mormons, Dr Doolittle, Paddington & Mr Majeika we’re all favourites in our household at that age.

Bowlfullofmush · 20/08/2023 17:50

Wished by Lisa’s Evans was brilliant fun. My 7 year old loved it!

Harebrain · 20/08/2023 18:08

The Moomins not The Mormons 😂

mittenanme · 20/08/2023 18:42

stargirl1701 · 20/08/2023 19:23

Ah it was you who put me on to The Armourer's House. I loved it! I am a tad older than 7 but that's neither here nor there ;-)
