Like Martin Amis, a great writer who I used to love when I was younger.
I'm going to reread No Country for Old Men to see if it's as good as I remember.

Hilary Mantel, Martin Amis and now Cormac McCarthy😔I know he was 89, but still sad.

As for his work, he's a superb stylist, utterly sublime. I remember a description of falling snow in The Road, for example, that sent shivers up my spine. People compare him to Hemingway and Orwell (for the sharp, clear prose), but I think he's better.

That said, man is he depressing. Oh God, he makes Thomas Hardy, A E Housman and Philip Larkin look like P G Wodehouse!! I made it to the end of Blood Meridian (mainly because Harold Bloom, my hero, thought it was the best American novel of the late 20th-century) and I'm not exaggerating when I say it took me a week to recover.

Yes, me too (blood Meridian) and I still wish I hadn't read the Road
But I love the All the Pretty Horses Trilogy and No Country for Old Men. Or at least I did a decade or so ago when I read them last.
