I've just finished this and it is the most depressing book I've ever read.

Page after page of grimness and cruelty.

Anyone else feel down after reading this?

Yes, very depressing I thought but also thought provoking. I didn't regret reading it but i think i would be careful about recommending it

After 100 or so pages I gave up, I have never not finished a book before (and I have read some dry old tomes/funny foreign stuff in my time).

In fact I noticed that despite it being marked 1/2 price I'd been charged full on the receipt, so I went back to the shop to get my 1/2 price money refunded and the woman said, "are you returning this?" so I did!

A bit late but wanted to say I Totally agree with OP.

Was sad that I'd spent a holiday on such unremitting gloom.

Wondered if she was trying to prove she could do "rough" rather than her usual everyone-has-a-title-in-England thing.

I thought it was weird, frankly. It seemed very American in its take on race and the 'underclass'. Her previous books have been excellent and I was really disappointed by this.
