Books that centre on friendship

Hello! Looking for recommendations on books that centre on friendship for a reading challenge I'm doing. Similar to The Moonlight Gardening Club, The 100 Years of Lenni & Margot, or The Car Share, all of which I read and loved. It doesn't necessarily have to be a recent book. Thank you!

I haven't read those books you mentioned so not sure if these are similar but they are about friendships

The vintage shop of second chances
Libby Page

The Dressmakers of Yarrandarrah Prison
Meredith Jaffe
(that one is about male friendship)

I assume you're aware of, as it sounds so similar
The Ladies' Midnight Swimming Club
Book by Faith Hogan

Do you have particular aspects of friendship you are interested in?

Thank you for these! I'll check them out. Hadn't heard of the Faith Hogan book, but that sounds perfect.

I'm interested in any kind of friendship (as long as it's not one that leads to a romance as its main function), but I like unusual ones. The Car Share was a 90yo woman and a heartbroken man in his late 20s/early 30s who become friends when they drive to France together. Lenni and Margot were generations apart. So I guess any friendships that form when it seems unlikely they would! Can be more than two people as well.

Thanks again!

Pretty much anything by Maeve Binchy.

Sweet Tea Tuesdays by Ashley Farley.

Those books sound great.

The vintage shop of second chances is a bit of a romance, but not between the main characters. I'll have another think 😊

The Neopolitan Novels by Elena Ferrari. One long story divided into 4 books for ease of reading. Starts with My Brilliant Friend. The whole piece is fascinating and engrossing.

Autocorrect error - that should read Elena Ferranti.

Testament of friendship by Vera Britten. I seem to remember it's a bit of a tear-jerker. The sequel to testament of youth, set in the 1920s.

I really enjoyed these impossible things by Salma El-wardany the story is centred around the friendship of three women. It made me laugh and cry

I'd add Miss Benson's Beetle by Rachel Joyce

Impostersyndrome · 17/05/2023 20:29

The Lido, by Libby Page, is lovely about friendship overcoming loneliness.

Newuser82 · 17/05/2023 20:30

Firefly lane!

HettySunshine · 17/05/2023 20:43

The Island of Missing Trees. It's about a myriad of different types of relationships and so beautiful. The feeling of the book is definitely Friendship.

Blackcountryexile · 17/05/2023 21:46

Perhaps try Saving Missy by Beth Morrey

Hadroncollideer · 18/05/2023 13:39

The Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood

The Weekend by Charlotte Wood, a brilliant book about long term friends, fantastic characters.

morecoffeeJD · 18/05/2023 15:45

An absolute masterpiece, I can't decide which of the four books I like the most!

Came on to say this. It's absolutely incredible.

Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood
The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Passing by Nella Larson
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh

Has to be said friendships in books are often toxic to make a good story.

Circle of friends mauve bunch

A little life is the best book I’ve read about friendship - it’s not for everyone though - I suggest checking the trigger warnings before reading. It’s very long as well - just over 700 pages

clpsmum · 20/05/2023 14:38

A thousand splendid suns

EmpressaurusOfCats · 20/05/2023 21:54

I’ve just mentioned her on another thread but Jane Fallon’s novels have a strong focus on friendship - mainly but not always between women.

There’s also Perestroika in Paris by Jane Smiley, about a friendship between 3 animals & a young boy.

cordelia16 · 21/05/2023 11:58

Thank you for all of the new suggestions... I've added a lot of books to my TBR pile! Appreicate everyone's input.
