I am reading this at the moment and think it is fantastic. What an interesting man and what a strange and sad early life he had. Empire of the Sun is one of my all time favourite novels.

I heard some of it on Book of the Week on R4 yesterday - fascinating. It's on my (long) library list...

I am a fan of Ballard's, all the way from Crash to Vermillion Sands, to The Atrocity Exhibition. He is an amazing author, dealing with extraordinary subjects that are pretty much ignored by the rest of the literary community.

I am reading his autobiography now. Still in his childhood years, but feels like I am reading his best (fiction) novel ever. What a life. What a man.

I read a review of that in the newspaper and will be buying it when it comes out in paperback (I don't like reading hardbacks). He's a very interesting, if rather dark and scary, man. Some of his books I love, some give me the shivers.

I just finished this book.

Very very good. Reads like a novel.

Fascinating.

I only ever read Empire Of The Sun and thought it OK, well written but just not my cup of tea, no zombies, aliens etc

CoteDAzur · 14/04/2008 13:36

newshmoo - Empire of the Sun is very different from Ballard's other books (that was his own experience being interned as a child in Shanghai) Would you believe Ballard is considered a sci-fi writer?

Check out "The Atrocity Exhibition". Still not about aliens and zombies, but I think you will find it interesting.
