It's taken me years and years to finally read this and obviously I love it (just over halfway through.) I'm already dreading finishing it and wondered if anybody could recommend anything similar? Soft, no peril, easy to get lost in. Very grateful for any suggestions!

The Greengage Summer by Rumer Godden is the closest book to ICTC, I always think.

MallowPink · 24/01/2023 20:49

Oh yes @pelargoniums that sounds lovely!

The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford. Also, the (published as) YA novels of Eva Ibbotson. My personal favourite is The Morning Gift.

Diary of a Provincial Lady

A Traveller in Time.
Can't remember who wrote it, but think it's a bit of a classic.

Dusty Answer and Invitation to the Waltz, both by Rosamond Lehmann.

I read both of these around the same time as I read I Capture the Castle - deep in my Virago Classics phase. Lovely books.

Also, speaking of imprints/publishers rather than authors/titles per se, check out Persephone Books and Dean Street Press who have reprinted some really good forgotten female writers from the early to mid 20th century.

The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets by Eva Rice.

Similar to I Capture the Castle, lovely story.

i always think of it as quite similar to Cold Comfort Farm for some reason
