Has anyone read Richard E Grant's memoir? I have a question!

I've just finished reading Richard E Grant's memoir-A Pocketful of Happiness and really loved it but something was annoying me throughout the whole book. He mentioned when he met Joan she had a young son but then the son isn't ever written about again throughout the whole book. I would have imagined the son would have grown up in their household and have been there throughout the time Joan was dying but no mention of him at all.
I'm just being nosey but Richard appeared to have been unflinchingly honest about all the events in his life that I would have expected some mention of his stepson. Did anyone else think this or have I missed something in the book?

Perhaps the step son asked to be excluded and REG respected that?

I haven't read the book but I just listened to his Desert Island Disks. Well worth a listen but you'll need a hanky!

I also wondered about that. But he never mentions it so I assume the son asked for privacy or else there was some sort of rift?

Yes I thought he had asked for privacy too but then wondered why REG didn't put one line of explanation in as to why he was never mentioned in the book.
I listened to the desert island discs when he was on it and this prompted me to buy his book!

I wondered too. Watching to see if anyone can enlighten...

Very little about Tom online too - a couple of photos of the Washington-Grants with both children (as adults too), and Olivia and Tom look very close in age. I would assume he wanted to remain private.

He has been thanked at the end of the book but I did wonder about his lack of inclusion in the actual book.

LuciaRoche · 28/03/2023 22:06

Very odd!! No mention at all.. I think there must of been a break up or maybe Tom didn’t want to be mentioned at all?

LimeLimeLime · 19/05/2023 09:49

I've just finished the book and wondered the same thing. Since I imagine the papers would be all over any rift, and he has been acknowledged at the end, I can only assume that he is a very private person and did not want to be mentioned.

Does he mention his brother in the book?

I don't think so. Only his mother, I think.

I wouldn't assume it indicates any kind of breach. A friend of mine, a fairly well-known novelist, has written a memoir, and is in the process of publishing a second. Her first one is about a sojourn overseas with her husband and children. Her husband didn't want to be in it, so there's no mention of him. They're very happily married, but the memoir reads as though she's a single parent. The second memoir is about her childhood, and omits a sibling who didn't want to be written about.

I know that I'm a bit late to the party but I am wondering the same thing. I'm just really hoping that he's asked for privacy. 🤞

I have just read the book as well and am also wondering about his step son. Maybe Richard E should give us ' wonderers 'an explanation ? Just hope it's nothing sinister!

Seriously, you think he owes a random reader an explanation, just because they think there may be something 'sinister' in him not talking about a member of his family circle?

I really enjoyed the book and wondered about the step son too, did lots of Googling to no avail, like pp I came to the conclusion that it was a privacy issue.

He’s such a lovely man and I wouldn’t read anything into it.
