26-ish books for 2023

Tinkhasflown · 01/01/2023 13:15

A shiny new thread for 2023. There didn't appear to be one do hope it's ok that I have created it this year.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

same

Nordicmom · 07/11/2023 13:59

I’m getting through my no
20 . The woman in me - Britney Spears very quickly ,I read half yesterday .
Then I’ll return to my two unfinished ones or also have my eye on the latest Richard Osman in my drawer .

Wildernesstips · 07/11/2023 18:25

@Iamblossom you have just reminded me that I have Demon Copperhead on my kindle!

BobDear · 07/11/2023 22:01

@Wildernesstips It's brilliant - enjoy!

JuJuHeyHey · 08/11/2023 21:18

I use the iReadItNow app to log my books. It's very low rent but does the job!

26: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
What a fantastic book, and it made me so cross . It stirred me up like the fictional equivalent of Caroline Criado-Perez' Invisible Women.

And, I'm pleased to have achieved 26 books!

GalileoHumpkins · 11/11/2023 19:49

71 The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward.

TrustPenguins · 12/11/2023 11:06
  1. Summerwater by Sarah Moss

I really liked this. So much suspense and scene setting... was gripped! 4 out of 5.

EspeciallyDetermined · 12/11/2023 13:11

@TrustPenguins I LOVED Summerwater. I am very familiar with the area where it is set, which added to the interest.

Amdone123 · 14/11/2023 10:30

@Wildernesstips well done! I'm not sure what my score is, but I've read a few. I need to go back to the beginning of this thread and count.
I don't know if this thread is making me read more, but I'm enjoying the recommendations, etc.
I've just read Not A Nice Family, Shari Lapena, which I really enjoyed.
I've started Emma Rous, her 2nd one. It seems really good ( I loved the Au Pair), but I think I'm all Who - dunnit - out !
I'll look on my shelf, maybe something a tad light hearted I'll find.

Amdone123 · 14/11/2023 10:52

I've just counted - 21 ! I'm pleasantly surprised.
5 more to go to reach that 🎯
It's doable, but I'll see how I get on.
Happy reading, folks!

GalileoHumpkins · 14/11/2023 10:55

72 The Signalman Man by Charles Dickens.

TrustPenguins · 16/11/2023 17:27
  1. Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan

Short but powerful book. A decent 4 out of 5.

And that's my 26 books done! 👍

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/11/2023 21:19

106 Night Watch (Pratchett)
107 Fifth Elephant (Also Pratchett)

Bored of them now. Will go back and read the witches books at some point before Christmas.

First reading the series of Ordinary Magic books, as the ninth book has just come out.

So...
108 Death and Relaxation
109 Devil and Details
110 Gods and Ends
111 Rock, Paper, Scissors
112 Dime a Demon
113 Hell's Spells
114 Sealed with a Tryst
115 Nobody's Ghoul
116 Brute of All Evil

These should see me through until December. :)
Then there will be the annual reading of The Dark is Rising. And maybe more of that series.

GalileoHumpkins · 17/11/2023 08:49

73 The Push Ashley Audrain.

Breathmiller · 22/11/2023 13:39

Inspired by TrustPenguins I just read Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan..

Powerful little read indeed and has made me want ro read more about the Magadalene Laundries.
Any recommendations?

It also takes me to book number 26 (from March - i had read some before but didn't count as I only joined here then) This thread has been great and really inspired me to read more this year. Look forward to doing it again next year.

GalileoHumpkins · 23/11/2023 14:15

74 Waiting for Ted by Marieke Bigg.

MargotMoon · 26/11/2023 08:12
  1. Reasons To Be Cheeful - Nina Stibbe. Quite like this until about two-thirds of the way through when it suddenly clicked and I LOVED it. The humour in her writing is so understated but builds up beautifully. Going to read her Christmas one next month.

  2. The Grave Tattoo - Val McDermid. I liked the premise but the plot was all over the place and some of the dialogue made me wince. Needed a good edit!

Wildernesstips · 26/11/2023 15:58

@Breathmiller well done on reaching book 26 too!

27 - Burial Rites by Hannah Kent
Great fictionalised account of the last execution in Iceland - it's so atmospheric and pretty bleak. Agnes, spends time in custody at a farm whilst awaiting her execution. The interaction between her and the family is so interesting, as she tells her story first to a trainee priest, and then to the family.

28 - Open House by Elizabeth Berg
Not quite as good as Range of Motion. This is the story of how Samantha deals with the unexpected split from her husband and what happens when she has to open her house to lodgers. If you like Anne Tyler or Carol Shields, you would like Elizabeth Berg.

Tinkhasflown · 28/11/2023 22:51

An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena. I think it's book 37 for me. I stopped counting as this number is high because of the audio books I have started listening to.
This book was just ok. I wasn't blown away by the ending. Despite this I have another of her books on the go: A Stranger in the House.

GalileoHumpkins · 28/11/2023 22:52

75 The Whispers by Ashley Audrain.

Wildernesstips · 30/11/2023 20:55

29 - Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
Such a strange book (which I listened to on Audible). I think I might have got more into it had I physically read this one. Not really sure what to make of it - I feel like I'm still processing it.

GalileoHumpkins · 30/11/2023 22:58

76 Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price.

Nordicmom · 02/12/2023 09:24

I finished my no
20.The Woman in me - Britney Spears ages ago then read
21.The Last Devil To Die - Richard Osman
now returning to finish
Billie Summers by Stephen King . I have a bit less than half left and similar of The Forth Wing By Rebecca Yarros . Don’t think I’ll have time to get to 26 within this month with everything going on but I have mostly enjoyed what I’ve read this year and will try to remember to continue to make time for it next year .

Amdone123 · 03/12/2023 16:04

Finished number 22. Stephanie Green - The ups and downs of an airport doctor. Very interesting.
23 - I'm back on my crime.
Lynda La Plante - Vanished.
Read the 1st chapter - I'm hooked.
