A shiny new thread for 2023. There didn't appear to be one do hope it's ok that I have created it this year.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

I wasn’t as active on last years thread as I have been and I just about managed 26 so here with renewed vigour and jumping online specifically to ONLY find this thread so I can get cracking with my first book

Magentax · 01/01/2023 21:05

hello! Was on last year on a different name but would like to join again.

I’m nearly finished A Maigret Christmas and other stories by George Simenon so that’ll be number one.

Scout2016 · 01/01/2023 21:44

Happy New Year. I'm joining up for first time too, with good intentions but no target. Hoping joining might spur me on a bit...
Last book of 2022 was Miss Clara by Noel Streatfeild. Started well but don't think I would recommend it, partly because the blurb spoiled it and then a good chunk around 4/5ths in dragged.
First book of this year is Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. Around a 3rd through and enjoying it so far.

Nordicmom · 02/01/2023 00:54

I managed to finish 29 last year and started 2 more . My goal was 26 and I nearly emptied a drawer in my bedroom . I will continue with this same goal my life is too busy and have many health problems and endless fatigue so I know more isn’t very realistic . I’m pleased I managed to stare devices less and read this amount .
I’ll continue The Big Dark Sky by Dean Koontz
and Richard Osman’s third Thu Murder Club Book .

Joining in.

I lost count last year. This year I'll number my books.

Currently dipping into
1 - Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie, and
2 - The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson.

HilarysMantelpiece · 02/01/2023 08:53

May I join also?
I've fallen out of the habit of reading regularly, although I love it.
I've read 3? or 4? since Christmas... including "Blood Orange" (nice comfortable read) and two by Kate Atkinson ("Life after Life" is one of my favourite books).

1/26 "Hot Hand" by Ben Cohen. Meh. It's alright but not particularly well written nor sciency enough for me.

Citygirlrurallife · 02/01/2023 09:08

Finished book 1
Songbirds by Christy Lefteri

beautifully written and heartbreaking, story of a Cypriot woman who takes in a Sri Lankan maid when he husband dies just before she gives birth. 10years later the maid suddenly goes missing, and she has a come to Jesus moment of realising she knows nothing about her or the other immigrant women who come to Europe in search of a better life. Highly recommended

TheSpook · 02/01/2023 09:47

I started on last year's thread but dropped off.
I used to read 50+ books a year but lost my reading mojo and spend far too much time scrolling.
My target for 2022 was 25 and I read 26. Would have been more but I got bogged down with two 800 pagers that took me 2 months.

I like crime and thrillers and have recently got back into historical novels.

I'm currently reading a John Grisham. I used to read his books back in the 80s and they age rather well.

@HilarysMantelpiece Life After Life is in my top ten and I see KA has a new book out.

What I'd like to read this year.
Agatha Christie - never read one.
Ben MacIntyre I loved Rogue heroes on TV.

Tinytigertail · 02/01/2023 09:52

First book this year is a non fiction, but absolutely gripping. The devil you know by Eileen Horne & Gwen Adshead. Started yesterday and will finish today.

HilarysMantelpiece · 02/01/2023 10:59

Ooh Tinytigertail I've just downloaded that on foot of your recommendation. It sounds right up my street.

Yawningalldaylong · 02/01/2023 11:07

Hope I can join, I so often buy books that I don't get to read so I've started back slowly with audiobooks, hoping I'll catch the bug and find more time. I love a true crime podcast as well so I need to find a balance. The Haunting of Alma Fielding is top of my list and I'll pick some mentioned on here for January.

Amdone123 · 02/01/2023 11:10

I lost count of how many I read last year, but this year, I'm going to keep a tally.
I read Sometimes I lie, Alice Feeney, over Christmas, which was brilliant. I've just started MJ Arlidge, Cat and Mouse, which I'm enjoying.
I was lucky last year to go away for a month and I read so much on that break. I discovered MJ Arlidge then ( Eeny Meeny), which I loved.

Amdone123 · 02/01/2023 11:12

@Yawningalldaylong , I love true crime too. One of the best true crime books I've read is one Last Kiss ( Chris Coleman case), but if you'd like fiction, I'd highly recommend Eeny Meeny.

GoodbyeLondon · 02/01/2023 11:13

Hello!

I'll join you please. Like this idea and 26 is probably doable for me.

Leakingtoilet · 02/01/2023 11:19

My target on good reads is 100 😯

I'm a quick reader and read most days on my commute, 1.5 hours a day. I also don't watch TV. I like crime fiction and thrillers best

Thanks, I'll take a look. I've been listening to some Sally Rigby books, a bit simplistic but I like the narrator, easy to listen to whilst making dinner. I need to start putting my phone down and actually picking up a book.

Well done you 😂

Ready and raring!!
I only managed 18 in 2022 but one of my NY resolutions is to read more during the day (and feel less guilty) so I might just make the 25! Although......25 is more or less a book a fortnight which sounds impossible for me! We shall see.

Starting off the year with Anthony Doerr’s Cloud Cuckoo Land I adored All the Light They Cannot See so have high hopes.

TheSpook
KA’s new book is called Shrines of Gaiety and I really enjoyed it, although not as much as Life After Life and her Jackson Brody books.

Hope you get as engrossed as I am!

Pourmeanotherwine · 02/01/2023 16:28

I'll join, 26 sounds achievable. I probably read less than one a fortnight normally, then compensate by reading 5 in a week on holiday. it would be good to read more, and to see some recommendations. Do you use an app to keep count? Or just something like phone notes?
I've just bought lessons in Chemistry from the Waterstones sale, I've got a Daphne duck Maurier one from the library waiting to be read, and we've got the first Richard Osman one, so one of those will be first.

Which Daphne Du Maurier book do you have? I finally read Rebecca last year and was my favourite book of '22. Want to read some more. I read Richard Osmans The Thursday Murder Club and enjoyed it, but I get the impression that people who like crime novels don't like his books as much. I am not overly into crime novels and just found it a funny read.

Pourmeanotherwine · 02/01/2023 21:49

The Daphne du Maurier one is The Parasites. I really enjoyed Frenchmans Creek and Rebecca so thought I'd try another. Decided to read the Richard Osman one first though.

ECMCS · 02/01/2023 21:52

Can I join too please? Trying to make more time for reading this year. I'm reading One Minute Later by Susan Lewis as my first book of the year. I have a few books sitting waiting to be read but will also be looking up some of the suggestions here. 😀

EspeciallyDetermined · 02/01/2023 22:15

@Citygirlrurallife I listened to Songbird on audio a couple of months ago and loved it.

Citygirlrurallife · 02/01/2023 22:51

@Pourmeanotherwine Frenchmen’s creek is one of my favourites - have you read Jamaica inn?

@EspeciallyDetermined wonderful isn’t it?
