26-ish books for 2023

Tinkhasflown · 01/01/2023 13:15

A shiny new thread for 2023. There didn't appear to be one do hope it's ok that I have created it this year.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

16. Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

Thanks baconandavocado I've just dowloaded this for my next read. I loved Station 11

Wildernesstips · 28/09/2023 19:05

I loved Station 11 too, and also thought the series was excellent. I've just added it to my "books to buy" list!

19: Case Study by Graeme Macrae Burnett
This was a clever little novel, but I got frustrated with the so-called biography of Collins Braithwaite and was more fascinated by the notebooks. I love the fact that the notebooks capture what I can only allude to as the "rather dated" style of novels of the early 60s.

  1. The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh - really interesting/well written story of a girl in foster care and her love for flowers.
Scout2016 · 01/10/2023 20:47

31. The Devastating Boys by Elizabeth Taylor. Collection of short stories. This was great. Tends to focus on relationships, awkwardness, social interaction. All quietly told, even when something awful happens, but each story comes to life quickly and sucks you in.

GalileoHumpkins · 01/10/2023 21:05

63 Thin Air by Michelle Paver.

thefinaltwist · 06/10/2023 23:25

Bit quiet on here?

thefinaltwist · 06/10/2023 23:33

Book 24 Janes Oswald Prayer for the Dead

Bit quiet on here?

I went into a total reading slump over the summer and haven't finished a book for ages, but am about halfway through The Running Grave on audible now, loving it and hoping that it will kickstart my interest again.

Wildernesstips · 07/10/2023 19:12

20: Range of Motion by Elizabeth Berg
Wow, this was such a good book about a wife willing her husband out of a coma after a freak accident. I had never heard of Elizabeth Berg, but if you like Anne Tyler and Carol Shields, I think you would like her.

21: Snap by Belinda Bauer
I found this a bit disappointing after the hype on the cover, but wanted to read about it because it is set in my area of the South West. I did enjoy it, but I'm never going to be a big fan of this kind of crime fiction.

It was great reading so much on holiday, it has really got me back into the mood.

BaconAndAvocado · 07/10/2023 21:24

Wildernesstips
I felt the same about Snap!

BaconAndAvocado · 07/10/2023 21:24

I think it won an award too.

MargotMoon · 08/10/2023 23:22

I haven't posted for ages, also in a reading slump but finished these over the summer. Don't think I'm going to get to 25 for the year!

  1. Run Rose Run - Dolly Parton and James Patterson.
Love anything to do with Dolly, and this was just a light, easy holiday read.

  2. Love, Nina - Nina Stibbe
Read this after listening to an old Adam Buxton podcast where she was the guest, and thought she was very funny. Am watching the TV show that was based on it as well.

  3. Into Thin Air - Jon Krakauer
Firsthand account of an Everest disaster. Fascinating to hear about the intense physical strain people go through to try and reach the top.

Amdone123 · 09/10/2023 09:24

Just read One Of The Girls, Lucy Clarke. Really good.
I've just started The Cottage, Lisa Stone aka Cathy Glass. My sister said it's really good. Seems like an easy read, but she wants to discuss it when I'm finished, so I'm intrigued.

GalileoHumpkins · 09/10/2023 13:14

64 Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent
65 Winter in Sokcho by Elisa Shua Dusapin

pinkpixie83 · 11/10/2023 08:56

I'm terrible at remembering to post; in fact i dont appear to have posted since jan!

I'm up to 33 books this year;

  1. Life Before Us - Roision Meaney
  2. This Is Us - Helen McGinn
  3. The Cornish Cream Tea Bookshop - Cressida McLaughlin
  4. Spare - Prince Harry
  5. What Lies Beneath - Adam Croft
  6. The Chalk Pit - Elly Griffiths - this is something like number 9 in the series but can all be read independently
  7. After I Do - Taylor Jenkins Reid
  8. New Family Required - Carmen Reid
  9. Confessions of a forty something fuck up - Alexandra Potter
  10. Other Parents - Sarah Stovell
  11. Yours, Mine, Ours - Sinead Moriarty
  12. The Museum of Ordinary People - Mike Gayle
  13. Summer Sisters - Judy Blume (a comfort repeat read)
  14. Love and Other words - Christina Lauren
  15. The Crossing Places - Elly Griffiths
  16. The Janus Stone - Elly Griffiths
  17. Death On Cromer Beach - Ross Greenwood
  18. Secrets - Freya North
  19. No One Saw a Thing - Andrea Mara
  20. Other Peoples Husbands - Elizabeth Nobel
  21. Love Untold - Ruth Jones
  22. One Good Thing - Alexandra Potter
  23. The Perfect Lie - Adam Croft
  24. A Room full of Bones - Elly Griffiths
  25. Me Before You - Jojo Moyes
  26. A Dying Fall - Elly Griffiths
  27. The Holiday - Erica James
  28. On Borrowed Time - Adam Croft
  29. Love from Paris - Alexandra Potter
  30. The Outcast Dead - Elly Griffiths
  31. The Ghost Fields - Elly Griffiths
  32. The Woman in Blue - Elly Griffiths
  33. The Dark Angel - Elly Griffiths

I seem to pick a lot of easy reads, and although I buy more recommended titles i tend to skip over them in favour of fluff.

Is anyone using GoodReads?

Tinkhasflown · 15/10/2023 14:13

@pinkpixie83 I use goodreads for reviews and to track my books. Find it really handy.

I'll come back and update my list. I'm way past my target for the year by am putting that down to audio books!

Finished my book no
18.Holly-Stephen King which I thought was really good and now I’m back to reading my 16.Billy Summers- Stephen King
I haven’t been reading books much in the last few months ,usually am often falling asleep attempting to in the evenings . Will have to see if I’ll get to 26 this year , life is busy and I’m tired …

Amdone123 · 15/10/2023 15:41

Just finished The Cottage, Lisa Stone aka Cathy Glass - brilliant.

Wildernesstips · 16/10/2023 21:07

22: Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach
Considering the subject matter, this was a really interesting read, but you do have to have a strong stomach!

EspeciallyDetermined · 16/10/2023 21:33

32: The Running Grave by Robert Galbraith (audio) - wow, that was phenomenal. 34 hours of pure brilliance. That’s going to be hard to follow.

BaconAndAvocado · 17/10/2023 08:10

EspeciallyDetermined
I'm reading this right now and don't want it to end!!

Can't believe JK releases one a year.
Only 2 to go...

EspeciallyDetermined · 17/10/2023 09:44

I didn't want it to end either, feeling a bit lost without it now.

GalileoHumpkins · 17/10/2023 15:43

66 My Husband by Maud Ventura
67 Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree
68 Starve Acre by Andrew Michael Hurley

Wildernesstips · 17/10/2023 17:54

23: Hangover Square by Patrick Hamilton
Not sure if this was recommended on one of the book threads on here, but I didn't really like this one. I found the audible version quite quiet though so that may have affected how I felt about it.

BaconAndAvocado · 17/10/2023 21:31

I’ve got Maggie O’Farrell’s Marriage Portrait to read after which I’ve been looking forward to for a while.

Although I’d rather have a new Strike to read!
