Light read in Cornwall

Looking for recommendations of light reads set in Cornwall? I'm not a big chick lit reader but every now and then fancy reading something fun and light and never know where to start. All the bunting puts me off. I've read some Rosalind Pilcher and love some of hers. Can anyone recommend a modern day equivalent of Coming Home to get me through the dark nights?

Not massively modern, but the Camomile Lawn would fit your soothing / Cornish brief.

Have a look at Celia Anderson’s books. From memory her first is set in Cornwall but I can’t be sure

Jeffjefftyjeff · 28/11/2022 21:20

Kitty Wilson ?

faffadoodledo · 28/11/2022 21:23

Patrick Gale's books are often set here.
Helen Dunmore's Zennor in Darkness.

Go back to a classic and read some Daphne du Maurier?
Although I haven't given you light reads, they're not difficult.
Errrr... I'll keep thinking!

verytired42 · 28/11/2022 21:25

Second Daphne du Maurier. Love her. Frenchman’s creek. Naughty French pirate. Such fun.

stickybear · 28/11/2022 21:34

Ah I've read Zennor in Darkness (loved it), Chamomile Lawn and Frenchman's Creek Grin think I've read at least one Patrick Gale too. Hmm didn't realise I had quite such a thing for Cornwall! I'll look at some of the other recommendations, thanks

The Cornish Cream Tea series by Cressida McLaughlin is chick lit but ok.
Poldark?
Fern Britton, Rowan Coleman and Miranda Dickinson have also written books set in Cornwall. I've read others by RC and MD, but not those.
Googling books set in Cornwall brings up lots of others.

Jane linfoot, I think, Chick lit set in Cornwall.

Little cornish shop something or another.

Patrick Gale - Notes from An Exhibition

Margaret Kennedy - The Feast

not sure exactly light hearted

Differentnamedifferentplace · 28/11/2022 21:46

Susan Howatch wrote some fabulous Cornwall sagas. Pemmarric is a favourite.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/11/2022 21:47

Janie Bolitho's Rose Trevelyan books are 'cosy' murder mysteries (à la Midsomer Murders) set in West Cornwall.

Penmarric by Susan Howatch. Family saga

inappropriateraspberry · 28/11/2022 21:49

Emma Burstall has a series set in Cornwall. Fictional village, Tremarnock, but lots of mentions of real places so good to get an idea of where it's set.

Coming Home by Rosamund Pilcher

It made me homesick for camping holidays in Cornwall as a child!

Ellmau · 29/11/2022 20:42

I've just read The Birdcage by Eve Chase which wasn't bad.

lovescats3 · 23/04/2023 11:51

Frenchman's creek is lovely

MouthfulofMidwinter · 23/04/2023 11:56

Seconding Patrick Gale's Notes from an Exhibition (art, family, mental illness, Barbara Hepworth in a scary cameo appearance), but also his The Cat Sanctuary, which has cool lesbians, cats, self-rediscovery after trauma, social comedy etc.

Sarah Moss's Signs For Lost Children is half- et in 19thc Falmouth, half set in 19thc Japan.

Coxspurplepippin · 23/04/2023 12:07

Jean Stubbs - several of her books are set in Cornwall.
Kelly Park
Family Games
Like We used to Be
Charade

Mary Wesley - the Chamomile Lawn as mentioned above but also A Sensible Life.

To the Lighthouse

An author called Howard Spring, who no-one's ever heard of - All the Day Long, I Met a Lady.

Rumer Godden - China Court.
