The Bullet that Missed Audiobook narrator

I've just started listening to the third Thursday Murder Club (The Bullet that Missed) only to find they have changed the narrator!!!

I'm only 2 chapters in but I'm finding it super uncomfortable to listen to. Does anyone else get this? I now associate the previous narrator with the characters.....I'm thinking of returning the audio copy and buying the physical book.

Very disappointing!

I got used to her. Was fine after a bit

I found it off putting at first, but she’s good, I’d have been perfectly happy if she’d been doing them from the start! Once I got going with it I got used to a new voice.

helpmedate · 25/10/2022 20:02

I also found it weird at first but I prefer her voice overall now I am used to it. I think they are both superb overall but Fiona Shaw is acting it more than Leslie Manville was? Would happily listen to either of them read any book!

I hate change though- can't listen to the Harry Potter books read by anyone other than Stephen Fry!

helpmedate · 25/10/2022 20:02

I guess I'm saying give it a bit longer as well!

At the end of the 2nd audiobook there was a discussion with Leslie manville and Richard and they discussed her narrating the next one! What a shame. I liked her!

I was also really disappointed, wish I had bought the kindle version.

She said something about if she could make it work, or something like that, didn't she.

She's been very busy!

Purpleavocado · 25/10/2022 21:35

After an hour it was fine, she grew on me!

44PumpLane · 25/10/2022 21:52

Thanks for all the replies, I have persevered and am now "okay" with Fiona.

She's clearly excellent, and had she done the previous two I would have been more than happy, it was just the surprise of not being what I expected but now I'm into it a bit more.

I agree with another poster though, Harry Potter is definitely a Stephen Fry only game for me!!

Any other similar books? I have a lot going on and am enjoying the light-hearted who dunnits as don’t have to use my brain too much and some light escape.

There's a series very similar called The Marlow Murder Club. Similar enjoyable twaddle of unlikely folk finding capers in solving murders. Robert Thorogood.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 31/10/2022 11:13

He wrote the Death in Paradise books

Try Richard Cole's ;Murder at Evensong'.
He used to be in The Communards (or Bronski Beat) is a TV and Radio presenter and a vicar. He is funny and nice.

His book is of a type to be compared with Richard Osman and it is, except Richard Cole is a far better writer.

I honestly thought it was just me. It’s the voices of Joyce and Ibrahim that you just can’t replace. Doesn’t sound right 😕. I miss Joyce talking about her gin and tonic in a can in her original voice 😂

I know I'm late to the topic party, but thank you for the info. I've only just realsied they've changed the actress reading the book and thought I was going mad.
I noticed someone asking for other good audiobooks. I can strongly recommend Sweetpea by CJ Skuse. Very good on audible, she is very much like Bridget Jones, but a serial killer you want to win. Theres 5 books in total and I have loved everyone, although I am yet to read the last, as I don't want it to end. Oh, and don't listen on Alexa if you have children near. Some of the things she does, are not for small ears. (Small ears have big mouths I find) x

Try Anthony Horowitz’s Magpie Murders or Hawthorne series.

I’ve just searched to find a discussion point for this. I still like the story, but it’s uncomfortable to adjust. Ron is no longer London, and Chris Hudson’s new found West Country accent is absolutely grating!
