I am in need of a good spooky read now the nights are getting darker and it's nearly October!

I have read and loved Michelle Paver books, Woman in White, the Whistling etc

Recommendations much appreciated.

Excellent idea.
This month I've got Thin Air by Michelle Paver and one of the free Prime first reads books called The Stroke of Winter.
I liked This House is Haunted by John Boyne and Naomi's Room by Aycliffe.

Hanging around for any more recommendations.

I've read Thin Air and Naomi's Room. They were both good but Naomi's room really creeped me out!

I've not read the other two, I'll go and have a look at them now Smile

Ooh lovely ,I'm looking for a spooky book too

DesMoulinsRouge · 01/10/2022 22:38

If short stories are ok I enjoyed The Travelling Bag by Susan Hill, Fireside Gothic by Andrew Taylor and Three Winter Ghosts by Gary Sargent.

Love a spooky tale at this time of year!

DesMoulinsRouge · 01/10/2022 22:39

Oh and if you want to listen to one, BBC sounds has one at the moment called The Hotel. That was good.

I quite like a bit of James Herbert. Crickley Hall was good and his Ash series.

Susan Hill always brilliant.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters was good as well.

I need to try Woman In White again.

icelolly12 · 03/10/2022 16:40

The most terrifying book I have ever read is Pet Semetary by Stephen King.

InTheCludgie · 12/10/2022 16:58

Can second This House Is Haunted by John Boyne, wonderful book. I've recently read The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell (spooky gothic set in the 19th century but a bit disturbing!) and I'm just starting The Ghost Stories of M R James atm.

Saucery · 12/10/2022 19:18

The Apparition Phase by Will Maclean is a very unsettling story, harking back to the Usborne Book Of Ghosts/Ghostwatch era.
The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp is brilliantly spooky. Avoid his later novel, Ghoster, though as it makes no sense at all and is incredibly boring.
Steve Duffy writes excellent short stories. Tragic Life Stories is a collection that springs to mind.
Rawblood, by Catriona Ward is one I always recommend for a sweeping, spooky family saga.
Flame Tree Press publish some good anthologies. Close To Midnight is their latest one, iirc.

Sunflowerkeep · 12/10/2022 20:25

The Witches Tree by Elena Collins. Really good!

I found the Silent Companions quite scary, even though it is actually quite a daft premise,

littlepeas · 13/10/2022 06:41

I quite liked The Haunting Season (short stories) and also Neil Gaiman’s 3 collections of short stories, although they tend to be disturbing (occasionally very disturbing) rather than spooky.

littlepeas · 13/10/2022 06:42

I liked Slade House by David Mitchell too.

Sweettea89 · 13/10/2022 06:42

Great thread, reading with interest. Any recommendations for horror books for teens. I've just purchased frozen Charlotte for my DD, she loves horror but is 10 and trying to avoid anything with swearing/sexiual nature- no limit on scariness though.

FuriousFurious · 13/10/2022 10:58

I started listening to The Hotel today on my commute.
I like it so far. Thanks for the suggestion Smile

FuriousFurious · 13/10/2022 11:00

@Sweettea89
Try Breathe Cliff McNish
And The Dead series by Charlie Higson

Winniewonka · 13/10/2022 11:03

I recently borrowed from the library, The Whisper Room by C.S. Green, it's the second in a series, I've just started the first one Sleep Tight and I feel it would be better to have read them in order.
They're detective thrillers with a supernatural twist. Detective Rose Gifford starts work in a police department out in the sticks with no link to the main station. Very few know of its work as they investigate crimes for which they doesn't seem to be a logical explanation.
I think it would make a great TV series I found Whisper House to be a real page turner.

westthroughthewhitleywood · 13/10/2022 11:07

Apologies as these aren't spooky in the literal sense.
But I would recommend Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson- a wonderful mix of creepy unnerving and some just very confusing!
And I'm currently reading We Need to Talk About Kevin. Again not scary but very sinister psychologically chilling.
