Is this worth preserving with? I’m struggling with it, it’s just not holding my attention and every time I pick it up it feels like a bit of a chore. I am also irrationally annoyed by the lack of paragraphs.

I love the premise, it has so many good reviews and it’s based around a subject I’m interested in.

I am about 100 pages in, shall I keep going or just give it up?

I couldn't hack it, for similar reasons plus feeling of impending doom

TattiePants · 10/08/2022 22:31

I think I only managed 20 pages so you’re doing better than me! It’s still on my book shelves with the plan to try it again but it’s been several years now and I’ve never been tempted to pick it up again.

I absolutely loved it. I found the voice, the themes, the characters all completely engrossing. I don't remember it being a struggle, but it was for book club which does help my motivation. It might be one of those books that needs a chunk of time dedicated to it.

I loved it though it was a bit of a challenge - definitely worth pursuing imo

RaininginDarling · 10/08/2022 23:31

I'm not sure I would've stuck with it as a book book but it is an excellent audiobook. In that format, I found it riveting, the clever monologue really came to life.

fruitstick · 10/08/2022 23:33

I read it as part of my book group.

I would have given up otherwise but I pleased I persevered. I get a huge sense of achievement when I finished.

It's a truly brilliant book, but not necessarily enjoyable or relaxing to read.

Deadringer · 10/08/2022 23:39

I didn't like it at all.

Nuffaluff · 11/08/2022 09:51

I read a lot of difficult books - I tried to read it because I read the Booker longlist every year - but this was too much for me.
It’s marmite.
If I were you I’d stop now. Better to quit 100 pages in than wait until 50 pages from the end like I did. (Would have thrown it across the room but it was a library copy).

PinotAndPlaydough · 11/08/2022 11:21

Ok seems I’m not alone! Lots of mixed responses though. I think I’m going to put it away for a bit and try again another time, maybe when it’s not the summer holidays and my mind doesn’t keep wondering while I’m reading!
