Big Jubilee Read

Apologies if this is a duplicate thread, I couldn't see one.

I have just looked at the list of books in the Big Jubilee Read and have already read 14. I'm not interested in the jubilee or the Commonwealth particularly but will maybe use the list to try a couple of novels I haven't read before.

Anyone else?

Big Jubilee Read - list for those who are interested.

JaninaDuszejko · 18/04/2022 10:35

I've read 15 but it's an interesting list and I'll be checking some of the others out, thanks for posting.

ChannelLightVessel · 18/04/2022 10:52

Thank you for posting: I had not heard of this. I’ve read 18, and there look to be some interesting suggestions.

ShirleyBadass · 18/04/2022 10:59

Ohhh I've read 20, but keen to add more of these!

MadameFantabulosa · 18/04/2022 11:04

A bit surprised and disappointed not to see anything by Doris Lessing on the list.

FourChimneys · 18/04/2022 11:13

Janina thank you for doing the link, I tried and failed...

MadameF* I like DL too but I guess we're all going to have books we are disappointed not to see on the list.

Good point @MadameFantabulosa I was trying to count the male/female split quickly, but I’m not familiar with some of the names.

Interesting list. I've read an unimpressive 11.

FourChimneys · 18/04/2022 12:25

bibliomania 11 is not unimpressive at all. Anyway, it would be possible to be extremely well read and score zero. I think it is just an interesting starting point but of course it misses out so many countries by being limited to the Commonwealth.

Fair point, Four. It's a less mainstream selection, which is refreshing.

weebarra · 18/04/2022 13:26

That's a really interesting list. I've only read 4 and consider myself pretty well read. I'll look for some of these!

ChessieFL · 19/04/2022 05:14

I’ve only read 5, with another 5 I’ve started and given up on! Lots on there I’ve never even heard of.

SapatSea · 19/04/2022 20:01

I've read 9 with 4 DNF. I haven't heard of a lot of the books - interesting

1frenchfoodie · 19/04/2022 20:29

Its an interesting list with loads of new to me writers as well as books I’ve not read from writers I like. I’m not usually one to buy from book lists but I think the span of time and countries of origin here.

If anyone is looking to explore the list I was able to buy 7 of them used from Awesome Books (other secondhand sellers exist but I find their range good) this evening for under £3 each. A fair few were in the £3-4 range though those from the 1950s were unavailable or pretty expensive.

FourChimneys · 19/04/2022 20:41

I think I might try to read one book from each decade, choosing ones by authors I have never read before. It's good to stray out of my comfort zone sometimes, I can be guilty of too much rereading instead of tackling new titles.
