I was dozing off, reading this lovely sedate story in bed, then OMG! I stayed up and finished the book. Would anyone like to discuss?

EachPeachPearMum · 09/01/2008 00:24

Just read it at christmas- fabulous!

moondog · 09/01/2008 00:25

I have just bought it for my father, primarily as i was brought up in Bougainville. Dying to get my hands on it.
Is Great Expectations essential reading beforehand? (Have read it but years agho.)

EachPeachPearMum · 09/01/2008 00:51

Wow! I actually had to wiki to find out about Bougainville- but the book was fascinating.
Nah- I haven't read GE in 25 years. Was most informative though

EachPeachPearMum · 09/01/2008 00:53

Well- you may have a different take on the situation there- would be interesting to know what you think once you've read it (I presume you'll pinch it once he read it?)

moondog · 09/01/2008 00:55

Oh yes.Was sorely tempted to do so before wrapping but resisted.

MrsMuddle · 10/01/2008 19:32

Moondog, never read GE, so not necessary at all. I'm dying to know what you thought of the book, having that background knowledge.

It will only take a couple of hours to get through, so stick the kids in front of the TV, read it and tell us what you thought.

I really loved the cover too (sorry)- I had the hb (from library) and the red inside with the cover art was just gorgeous.

moondog · 10/01/2008 23:00

Yes,it is rather beuatiful isn't it?

margoandjerry · 22/01/2008 21:48

reviving this thread as have been wanting to discuss this for ages.

I loved the cover art.

I loved Great Expectations.

I hated Mister Pip.

I was really puzzled by it. Great writing in parts and in other parts totally duff (with some really basic editing problems too). I just didn't quite "buy" the voice of the narrator and had problems locating it timewise iykwim.

It is quite shocking about 3/4 through though isn't it? Didn't see that coming.

EachPeachPearMum · 26/01/2008 21:40

Yes- it all happened a bit suddenly! I think I was just in the right place to hear the narrator.

MiaWallace · 01/02/2008 16:00

I agree with you margoandjerry. Didn't really enjoy it but it did make me want to re-read Great Expectations.

MarsLady · 01/02/2008 16:01

Just waiting to get it. Will come back when I'm done.
