The 13th Tale is set in the present day but travels back to the days of an elderly author who is telling her life story to a young girl. It's a kind of ghost story without any ghosts and is so cleverly written it makes you want to read it all day.

The Island is based on the true sory of the island of Spinalonga in Crete, where, during the 2nd world war, sufferers of leprosy were sent to live out their days. It's well written for a first novel and I was truely amazed and inspired at the bravery of the people of Greece, told through a love story.

The Wedding Officer is his 2nd novel (The Food of Love being the 1st) and is about an english officer sent to Naples during the 2nd world war to ascertain whether the Italian women requesting to marry english soldiers, should be allowed their request. It centres around the bombing of Naples and how the women and young girls had to turn to prostitution to survive. The research he based his book on is really interesting and taught me a lot about Italy in WW2.

How about this? Fluffy romcom.

Agree with luci about The Island. I loved it, it was one of those books where I was reading until the early hours. I then handed it round a few friends and they loved it as well

I didn't like The Island much, found the heroine a cold fish. Educational though and something to think about.
What language do you think she and her mum's friend were talking in? Seems unlikely the friend would know much English and the mum was so desperate to hide her origins she would never have taught/allowed the heroine to learn Greek.
