New Kindle

Some advice needed, please. I'm about to buy a new Kindle, and there's a choice of with or without ads. That option didn't exist when I last bought one. Is it worth paying extra for the Without Ads. How intrusive are they?

I bought the with ads. Not intrusive at all. Basically just on the sleep screen.

Has your new kindle arrived yet @Rokerwriter, how are you getting on with it?

Thinking of upgrading my 2015 one which is stating to run slow especially on opening and when using the shop. It's my second kindle, had a 2010 one with the keyboard before that.

Does the new one feel like an upgrade? Thinking of doing the exchange to get a discount....

FairyCakeSprinkles Not yet, it's going to be a gift for my daughter who's living abroad and finds it hard to get the books she wants. But I might treat myself if the ads aren't intrusive. Mine is from 2014, but to be fair I probably read 60% books, 40% Kindle so the Kindle is still going strong.

BUT we've just noticed that Prime are adding ads into TV shows unless you pay to upgrade and they are annoying as hell so it wouldn't surprise me if it got worse!

I did this a few months ago and also didn’t bother paying for ad free and as a pp says, they only appear when you open the kindle/screen saver.

I have a very old Keyboard Kindle and they offered me a fiver for it. I did not know about the exchange thing.

I've just paid £10 to remove the ads from mine so now it shows the cover of the book I'm reading. Works better for me as I always forget what books I've read otherwise. So it's not just about whether the ads are intrusive but also what it would show instead.

I'd prefer the ads not to be there but it only seems to show me ads for books I might like which isn't overly annoying.

Is kindle the only option for a ebook reader? After you've bought the kindle or whatever what else do you have to pay for? I've heard you get some free books?Which e reader is the best?

I had a paperwhite that I loved, and didn't think I needed to replace it, but tried a friend's new one and it is lightning fast.

I don't know if it's still available or if it was a Christmas thing, but I did a trade in and got a new paperwhite children's package which included a case, no ads and a bundle of content (which I didn't use) for quite a bit less than a standalone paperwhite.

I traded in my old kindle, got a discount off a new one and a voucher (which annoyingly was automatically applied to my account).

The new kindles are on a special limited time offer again today and if you have the discount it is in addition to the special offer.

I've caved and ordered it @noodlezoodle, it sounds like a good upgrade.

Any thoughts on Paperwhite or the other one, Oasis is it? I have an ancient paperwhite which has been fab but battery life seems to be waning…

@Bobbins36 The new paperwhite is brand new, whereas the Oasis is older now. The new paperwhite has many features of the Oasis, but cheaper. The Oasis has page turn buttons and more lights. The paperwhite has faster page turns/screen refresh and is meant to have a better battery.

The signature paperwhite has a higher spec than the other one.

I'd be more wary of buying the Oasis at the moment (unless the page turn buttons swing it for you) in case they bring out a newer version.
