Year of Wonders - Geraldine Brooks. It's about a woman's life in Eyam, Derbyshire during the Plague and it is so moving adn real and I sobbed and sobbed when her little boys died. Up past midnight is unheard of for me but there i was a snivelling wreck turning page after page. Read it, please do and if you have come on and rave about it with me on here!

Oh sounds good - I will check it out on Amazon (as if I don't spend enough time on there already!).

fizzbuzz · 05/01/2008 19:48

Ooooh I've read that yogabird, it is fantastic

janeite · 05/01/2008 19:51

Oh yes - I read that a few years ago; really enjoyed it. I read another of hers too but have no idea what - will have a Google and see if I can jog my memory.

janeite · 05/01/2008 19:52

This one - March. I enjoyed that too.

holidaywonk · 05/01/2008 19:54

I quite enjoyed it (and you're right, it is horribly sad when her boys die), but I couldn't help thinking that there is probably a better book to be written about Eyam - it's such an incredible story. I thought you could see the narrative cogs turning, IYSWIM (rather than just being swept along).

Apparently Brooks has another new one out soon - historical again I think.

Try her "Foreign Correspondence", too - it is brilliant.

yogabird · 06/01/2008 18:49

thanks 1066, Brooks is so much better than Joanne Harris who is now on my 'not to read any more of list!'

Yes - Joanne Harris is also on my "No put it down it will be shite" list. I just made the mistake of reading her latest, a teenage fantasy book and it was absolute tripe. Philippa Gregory is on that list for me too - I had a binge on her last year and then came to the conclusion that they are actually all the same book; they just have a different frock on each cover.

arionater · 06/01/2008 19:16

holidaywonk - there's a children's/YA book by Jill Paton Walsh called 'A Parcel of Patterns' which is also about Eyam, I presume the same story (the plague came in with a tailor or something, and the village isolated itself to stop it spreading?) I don't know how it compares to the Brooks book, which I haven't read, but I remember enjoying the Walsh one as a child and I'm sure it won various prizes.

policywonk · 06/01/2008 22:22

thanks arionater - will keep an eye out. Yes, sounds like the same story.
