Sensuous novels?

Definitely not 50 Shades 🤢🤢🤢.
There doesn't even need to be any sex, though good sex would be....🤔 good 😁.

Lately the novels I have been reading have either been plot driven (lots of story telling) or pages of description.

I'm not necessarily after anything highbrow, just recommendations for books that compel me to read them. Ideally I want something that I can escape into, beauty, maybe not physical beauty, a beautiful read.

Hope I have explained myself? Please suggest something, anything (except sci-fi 😆).

What you describe is how I felt about Seasons of Death and Life.

No sex Grin

GrinSex is allowed Grin. Just that I didn't want anyone to read my OP and assume that I only meant sex.

You, me and the sea by Elizabeth Haynes springs to mind.
Great location that plays a key part to the story and interesting, likeable characters. I loved it.

Dancing on Thorns by Rebecca Horsfall is just gorgeous.

The House of the Spirits by Isabelle Allende. Just beautiful.

Thank you, I have bought all of these so far.
IME Audible are good at accepting returns if you don't like a book, but I'm going to start with Seasons Of Death And Life and work my way through the list in the order they were recommended.

Thank you everyone Smile.

If you or anyone else thinks of anymore that I might like, please keep recommending them.

I don't mind sex in books at all, just as long as it is convincing! 50 Shades being the most obvious example of awful.
I suppose I should have asked for soulful novels? The kind that are beautifully written and stay with you. Maybe that's a better way to phrase it?

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver. There IS sex (well written) but also wider sensuality. I think it's a wonderful novel.
And Matrix by Lauren Groff. Again, actual sex features, but the writing itself too is very earthy, alive, sensitive... Not afraid to get into stuff (including gore and mud and things like that!)

I find it very hard to have a "mind's eye" or create pictures in my head, so my favourite books are those which lean heavily on the other senses, or create a real "feeling".

I love Morvern Callar for this reason, it is one of my favourite books, I find it very sensual - Amazon calls it erotic and jarringly poetic. I don't know if I would call it soulful though. For soulful and beautifully written - All the Light We Cannot See, A Gentleman in Moscow, Piranesi, Once Upon a River, Honeycomb by Joanne Harris (assuming you have already read Chocolat!)

(assuming you have already read Chocolat!)

Sorry, I mean Chocolat is the obvious Joanne Harris choice, not that Honeycomb is a sequel to Chocolat, it is a very different book.

Oh! I've thought of some even better ones - basically anything by Sarah Moss especially Signs for Lost Children (although that is a sequel to Bodies of Light so you might want to read that first). Also The Tidal Zone, by the same author.

Oh yes, Signs for Lost Children is one of my favourites of recent years. SO beautiful. And funny and fascinating too.

Frog Music by Emma Donoghue. Beautiful writing, evocative, very compelling plot and a little bit of sex.

applecatchers36 · 24/04/2022 23:47

The chamomile lawn by Mary Wesley lots of sensuous liaisons and great storytelling
