Trying to remember a book title...

It's a girls' boarding school story, but written for adults. Not salacious.

Set post WW2 (or post WW1?) The Head is tired, stuck in a loveless marriage to a bed-bound husband. The school beauty is assaulted by the gardener's boy. The groundsman is paralysed by polio (was there an epidemic at the school?) and is given a lifetime lease on his cottage. There is another scandal and it looks like the school might have to close. One of the mistresses has anger issues and an unrequited crush on another, and sets their house on fire while drunk.

Sounds awful! I think I enjoyed it and I would like to read it again. But I cannot remember the title or the author.

Anyone?

Both Debbie Young and Jenny Colgan have written boarding school stories aimed at adults - might it be one of these?

Sounds a bit like No Talking After Lights by Angela Lambert.
