..Notes from An Exhibition

Patrick Gale never read any of his books before

i know it's the subject matter that has absorbed me a lot..i can't decide if it is actually a well written novel

but it has made my head go funny

never read it, but you have got me intrigued. whats it about?

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 02/01/2008 20:19

I haven't read it, but have read and enjoyed rough music by the same author

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 02/01/2008 20:30

It is the story of a woman with bpd (this is my hook for being interested)

and it is her biography as seen from different people's point of view and through the notes of paintings she made during her life that have been collected for a posthumous exhibition

it is not a hard read

some bits I find a bit simplistic on the medical side tbh like it's written from the point of view of a novelist rather than with a true understanding but on the other hand it is very moving as a novelist can be empathetic

rather than as a person who isn't a novelist trying to write

so the overall effect is very absorbing..it has me drawn in

i would call it quite a romantic novel or maybe a Romantic one in harking back to the early 19c in some respects Coleridge and stuff

but it doesn't but there is a kind of a glimmer of the artist as tortured soul

finished it really good book

i liked it a lot and for a change found the structure and the different voices, time changes actually added to the experience rather than confusing it

highly recommend
so wil read his others
