Has anyone else read her? Her books get good reviews, but I've never met someone who has.
Out of curiosity, I've just read How Late it Was. I can see why she gets good reviews, as the writing is superb, but I had to get over the feeling that I could feel no connection with the characters. I realise this isn't a good way to judge a book, but I found it very difficult to summon up the enthusiasm for reading about these people.
I was wondering if anyone else had read her....

I've read a few of her books and know her a little because she tutors on an MA creative writing I did years ago. She got started as an attendee on the MA herself. She's a lovely person and I like her books but I also totally get what you're saying. She's a very cerebral writer, great vocabulary and sentences but not emotive. I quite like that personally but I can see it could be an obstacle.

I wasn't keen on the first one of hers I read (I think it was Accidents in the Home) but I gave her another chance, and really liked Clever Girl. The London Train was OK too.

I've read a few of hers, Accidents in the Home, Clever Girl, the London Train and The Past. I've enjoyed them though I find the characters a bit samey. There's always a feckless man, and people living a hippyish existence.

London Train is by far her best. I would thoroughly recommend that.

I recently read my first book by her -Free Love which is her new book and I really liked it. I also bought Everything wiil be Alright which is on my TBR pile.

well - I take my words back, or maybe that was not a good one to start with. I've just read The Past, and really liked it. Beautifully written and very perceptive.
