The worst thing is I think I read it relatively recently, but I’m really awful at remembering anything about what I’ve read once I’m finished with a book, and I can’t find anything in the ‘read’ section of my kindle or on my shelves that fits the bill. Maybe I got it from the library? Google is not helping me either.
Older (?) woman who imagines herself white genteel, watching her neighbours. She may have some kind of maid/ servant/ help but is otherwise lonely. She suspects one of the neighbours of foul play - I think she might suspect the wife of an affair first and then thinks the husband has killed the wife. The bins are not collected either due to bad weather or a strike I can’t remember which (though I sort of think this was set earlier than the general strikes but could be totally wrong there) and rubbish is piling up on some land behind the woman’s house. I think she suspects at some point the body is there.
Can’t remember if there actually was any murder/ anything dodgy going on or it was just in this woman’s head.
Please help, for some reason this is really irritating me but I feel sure it must ring some bells with someone!
