Anyone read it? Not my usual book at all - I like chapters and a 'proper' narrator and narrative structure - but, what a book!

I've nearly finished it and desperately need to talk to someone about it with!!

I read it quite a while ago so am hazy on some of the details but in general, I liked the structure and thought the development of the appeal and the actions of various people completely believeable - I can't remember the name of the character who was the main bossy organiser but her "encouragement" to people to donate more and do more was totally believable, also lots of the little details like the lady who insisted that Sainsbury's would totally match the funding, despite all evidence to the contrary was a funny moment!

In general however, I thought it was pretty unbelievable and the idea that so many people would collaborate in the deception was ridiculous! Also I know the mechanism of the emails allowed for the development of the friendship between two of the characters but were we really supposed to believe that they were emailing each other when in the same circumstances anyone else would use a text/WhatsApp?

I enjoyed it and liked the format, but having spoken to a couple of people in RL about it, I seem to have missed or misunderstood stuff – but then again, they seem to have missed or misunderstood things that I DID pick up on!

I loved it. Had read about two books in a year and this got me back reading again. I bought it for three friends for Christmas.

Talk away! My favourite crime book for some years. I recommend it to all my customers.

sunshinesupermum · 10/01/2022 15:07

I loved it, especially the original format.

Her second one is out very soon

Thought it was really different, liked the format once I got into it I was dubious as to whether a story unfolding through a series of emails would work, thought it did. One of the better crime books I read in 2021

When it arrived I thought I was going to hate it but it carried the story surprisingly well. A good fun read.

Glad I found this thread. I'm reading it now and feel a bit confused sometimes but I'm definitely liking the format.
125 pages in and wondering what Isabel's issue are?!

bigbadbarry · 20/11/2022 09:07

I thought it was going to be brilliant and was really disappointed. Reading how many people loved it I’m wondering if I missed something! Not for me. I was bored by the whole middle chunk.

DillDanding · 20/11/2022 09:09

I read it ages ago so I’ve mostly forgotten it, but I do remember I really enjoyed it.

peppaandherbloodymuddlepuddles · 20/11/2022 09:44

@bigbadbarry yes I can see your point. I'm still waiting to see who has actually been murdered

emsmum79 · 20/11/2022 12:21

Yes, it was definitely a book where it was all revealed slowly.
I was not impressed with her 2nd book at all, sadly.

I read the second one first, and quite enjoyed it.

I have recently finished the Appeal and thought it was clever, but I read it on my Kindle and I think it would have been much easier as a paper copy, I think you do need to be able to go back and check things easily to get the most out of it.
