Just finished Patricia Cornwell's new book...

... and what a pile of plop it was!

I don't know why I bother - I loved her early books but they have got so bad lately. I get them from the library so at least I'm not shelling out for them, but I must stop reading each new one in the vain hope they improve, as they don't.

Anyone else a Patricia Cornwell fan? (or used to be )

used to be, but gave up when they became sooooo formulaic! Don't bother these days.

Beginning to feel the same about Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen as well, but think I can probably bear to read their next 1 or 2 !

I gave up several books ago but heard that her supposedly dead lover came back to life. To save me trawling through it, is he still alive and are they together?

Sidge · 19/12/2007 21:12

Yes, agree that Tess Gerritsen is similarly dull and formulaic.

Kathy Reichs less so but hers are having less and less of the interesting forensic stuff and more historical stuff. Still prefer KR to PC though!

Goosey - yes, he is, it was all a conspiracy and they are still together(ish)

Sidge · 19/12/2007 21:17

Benton Wesley, and the policeman is Pete Marino.

Hi all

I too was a Patricia Cornwell fan and I completely agree with you all, her books have become decidedly disappointing. Have any of you read Jeffrey Deaver?...They are excellent

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 17/02/2008 21:39

Her latest one is half read on my bedside table. So yes, I used to be a fan. Will try to finish it shortly.

I rushed out to nuy the latest patricia cornwell as i have all of the scarpetta series and i was bitterly dissapointed, has anyone noticed how whe has switched from the first person perspective and back again. Marino's character and lucy's has changed completely too. I tried the other series too (island of dogs??) and thought they were very poor too, i read to the end thinking the story would start soon but it never did!

DiscoDizzy · 17/02/2008 21:40

I loved Patricaia Cornwell's earlier stuff but I agree her last few haven't been that gripping. I'm waiting for her most recent to come to the library which i'm looking forward to reading but I fear I may be disappointed.

i stopped about five yeras ago. she is BONKERS. another loony is elizabeth george, her most recent 'what became before he shot her' is the most depressing book i have ever read. and that includes plenty russian gloomsters.

Psychomum5 · 17/02/2008 21:47

i got the latest book of hers for xmas, started it, and still not finished it.......read about 8 others at least in the meantime tho!!!

have got all her books, but the last 3 at least have been so boring and 'samish'.

kathy reichs is good, but I started hers thinking they would be likes the 'bones' searies and they really are not.......not least beacuse Temp has a whole different backgroud in the book to the series.....(what is that about, and why)

I am now enjoying james patterson, jefferey deaver and karin slaughter (and still not gone off tess gerritson as long as they the 'maura' ones, rather than the 'spy thriller type'.)

ooh, and not sure if anyone has tried her, but torey hayden is really good to IMO, altho she write 'true story' books on teaching children with special needs and special ed needs during the 70's and early 80's, so quite painful at times, but because they not about 'her crap childhood', they make for more riveting reading than other 'true' books, IYGWIM
