I need a Chalet School fix

Please help:

Where can I download a Chalet School book? I'm astonished that I cannot find any as ebook.

(When you're under the weather, nothing quite hits the spot like a bit of EBD escapism.)

I don't think we get many Christmas episodes in the later books, given that they focus on term time mostly, but I agree that that's the best! I've just acquired an unabridged hardback of Jo Of and there's even more colour and detail in the original.

I'd have loved pinafores as a child! Until I was about 13 anyway.

I'm sneaking into this thread because I was gutted to discover that my mother has charity shopped all my chalet school books - I was planning to binge them over Christmas and they're gone :(

Oh no that’s awful!! Hopefully they will make someone else very happy? Do you need the link?

Oh no! The same thing happened to my MIL in the 1970s and she's still sad about it.

I really hope so. Randomly, she's kept Little women and the Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe.
I'd love the link, please.

I've read nothing but Chalet School this holiday. I don't want to go back to work - they're just about to move to the Platz abd I need to keep going!

Thank you :)

That’s some dedicated reading @MrsHamlet! I’m going slow and just reading some favourites, Geisel is just about to run off to see the waterfalls!

Girls Gone By Publishers own the rights to the Chalet School and keep refusing to do ebooks. They claim their readership isn’t interested, despite numerous FB threads etc suggesting ebooks. Please email them at www.ggbp.co.uk/contact-us/ to prove that there is interest!

Well.... I've finally finished, having read nothing but chalet school since Christmas.
I feel a bit lost now.

Those of you buying physical books- there is a really good Facebook group called Chalet School sales and wants where people sell. The Girls gone by books are great as they often include a short story and publishing background for each book. You can often pick up copies of the paperbacks very cheaply because some of them were cut so much from the original hardbacks, they even left out whole chapters! There is a list of these cuts in the files section of the group. There is also s separate chalet school discussion group.

There are 2 excellent fan societies - Friends of the Chalet School and New Chalet Club. Both produce newsletters 3 or 4 times a year, very different styles so both are worth reading. Active Facebook pages too. Girls Gone By publish a few titles every year with limited print runs so they go out of print fairly quickly. They also publish fill-in titles which I'm trying to collect. I've loved the ones I've read - so much research and care goes into the backgrounds. Also recommend the Girls Gone By weekly newsletter. Although mainly because I like hearing what the author's cats have been up to....
Thanks for the recommendation to Faded PageGrin Looks great.

Found this thread after posting today dithering about whether to give away my Chalet School books. The thread has made me smile. I absolutely loved the Chalet School as a child and reread them many times years ago. This list amused me inside the front cover of one....

I’ve just found this thread! I love the CS books… and they have been a solid lump of comfort for me at different times. I’m currently 300 miles away from the box of them in my Mums garage (long story) and am making do with an M and S four book compilation from the 80’s. So glad I’m not alone in re-reading them as an adult.
I’m be v grateful for the link if anyone is happy to share it?

just found this thread. Fond memories of reading Chalet School when I was growing up. Think I have a lot of the Armada cut paperbacks from the 70s. I have seen a few of you mentioning a possible link for the ebooks? Would it be possible to gain access? Kindle is good for me cos I can make the text bigger

Surely it's not too many years until the Chalet School enter into the public domain and we get it for free... Right? Grin

It'll be a while yet in the uk. Copyright is life+70yrs. EBD died in 1969.

She wrote quite a few non-Chalet books. I recommend The School By The River; I don't know how easy it is to get hold of by whatever means.

There are quite a few Angels Brazil books on Project Gutenberg. I don't think she's as good a writer as EBD, but the early ones are interesting from a social history point of view.

Dorita Fairlie Bruce was the fourth of the Big Four girls' authors of that era. I have no idea how easy it is to get hold of her books.

Hands up anyone who wants to slap Joy, and thinks the twins should have been drowned at birth.

I do like Girls of the Hamlet Club and The Abbey Girls, after that I think it's downhill all the way.

I loved Girls of the Hamlet Club and kept hoping the rest would improve, but they just got sillier! Completely agree about wanting to slap Joy.
