What we're reading

I need a Chalet School fix

Please help:

Where can I download a Chalet School book? I'm astonished that I cannot find any as ebook.

(When you're under the weather, nothing quite hits the spot like a bit of EBD escapism.)

If you want to read a good boarding school book right now, whilst waiting for the Kaffee und Kuchen guzzlers to arrive, may I recommend Beswitched by Kate Saunders?

It's about a modern girl who timeslips back to a 1930s boarding school. I picked it up not expecting much but I loved it.

@DuneFan

Angela Brazil is good. I've had some LM Alcott and Susan Coolidge free on the ebook sites. There are 2 more sequels to What Katy Did/At School/ Again - Clover and something else, which are quite fun.

Read them all Smile Apart from Angela Brazil, not sure what I've read of hers.

My 12 yo DD is writing a Chalet School fanfic as we speak! I can’t tell the difference when she reads an extract out loud!
I downloaded about a hundred Angela Brazil’s on kindle for free recently.

Try Antonia Forest, the Marlow series. They're as far from the Chalet School as you can get, being packed with remarkably real characters.

I had a random musing the other day. I'd love someone to write Jos books that are mentioned in the series.

I have 5 Antonia Forests, I think, including a very different, non-school one - The Thuggery Affair, IIRC - about Laurie and Nic getting mixed up with drug smugglers.

I shall look for AngelaBrazil on kindle.

Oooh, noted, @StrychnineInTheSandwiches .

A recommendation on a similar thread that I enjoyed was the non-fiction 'Terms and Conditions: Life in Girls' Boarding Schools, 1939-1979' by Ysenda Maxtone Graham.

(thank you to the Mumsnetter who recommended it if by any chance they are on this thread!)

But, you see, that's exactly why I need the total escapism of the Chalet's utterly improbable world.

The Trebizon books are on Kindle. I read them for the first time as an adult and to be honest, I wasn't particularly thrilled by them, but they do fit the bill as a light read.

Another option is to have a browse for Chalet fan fic on Archive of our Own!

I read an excellent fanfic combining Kingscote and Hogwarts. Laurie and Nic's first term at Hogwarts. It was called A Wand With Sixteen Strings.

I've read that, it was great. I haven't even read Harry Potter but I enjoyed it.

There was another one I read where the Marlows go to the Chalet School - it wasn't on AO though and I can't remember now where I found it. There was a brilliant scene where Nicola totally fails to do the 'I say, you don't mean Josephine M Bettany - she's my favourite author' routine and more in the same vein.

God I love the chalet school books. Excellent nonsense all round.

@AgathaMystery

God I love the chalet school books. Excellent nonsense all round.

They are. The insufferable Robin singing Joey back from the jaws of death, everyone suspected of having TB and being subjected to fresh air, creamy milk and a trilingual education, but never actually developing it, weirdly sickly religious interludes, an obsession with cakes and curtseying etc. Fabulous.

I completed a full set of chalet school books this year, and managed to duplicate some. If anyone is interested in which I have spare, message me (but it might take me a couple of days to work out which ones are spare)

Girls Gone By website prints the original unabridged versions of the CS. I think it's £12 a book.

Is it porn, is it Joey Bettany and Co?

Who knows!

So often the two collide.

Forgive me, Miss Brent-Dyer, for my vulgarity. I feel ashamed.
