DH and I both read a book about 10 years ago, we want to reread it but neither of us can remember what it's called or who wrote it. We had it as a hardback so I think it was probably published around 2010 but thats just a guesstimate.

What we can remember is:

  • It's non fiction
  • it's set in S America, possibly Brazil
  • it's an account of a man in the 18th or 19th Century doing something like mapping the Amazon (not sure about that bit)
  • He has a wife who at one point treks 1000s of miles to find him and endures all sorts of hardships.

We both remember that it was a bit like "Longitude" but an easier read.

I've tried googling but didn't get anywhere. Does it ring any bells for anyone?

@ EmilyGrundyForPM - Is it The lost city of Z by David Grann published 2009 ? There was a film on TV earlier this year which I meant to watch. It's about the disappearance of Percy Fawcett, a British explorer. A woman adventurer did try to find him by plane but she wasn't his wife.

Bedlam Stacks? Or was that about getting a plant, not mapping?.

The Signature of All Things? I think that's fiction but it reads like non-fiction (disclaimer - it's on my shelf but I haven't read it yet).
