Welcome to the eighth (and probably final) thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2021, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, it’s not too late to and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read. The lurkers among you are also very welcome to come out of the woodwork and share with us what you've read!

The first thread of the year is here, the second one here, the third one here, the fourth one here, the fifth one here, the sixth one here and the seventh one here.

How have you got on this year?

I also got an Amazon voucher so will be perusing the bolded items on all your lists for inspiration!

Piggyinblankets · 25/12/2021 12:03

I also bought myself Hard Times so will set up the readalong for that soon. I am so used to tomes, I didn't realise it was quite short!

noodlezoodle · 25/12/2021 12:04

Merry Christmas 50 Bookers, and thank you for making this my perennial favourite place on the internet.

biblio I am SHOCKED by No book haul here - the family consensus seems to be that I don't need any further encouragement - but I did get a requested guide to cycling routes. Don't they know that there's no such thing as too many books?!

Matilda2013 · 25/12/2021 12:26

Merry Christmas everyone! Xmas Smile Managed to get more books than normal this year (although one I did buy myself via Bert’s Books Secret Santa!) and a kindle and Waterstones voucher today! Definitely pleased.

Have a lovely day everyone.

Merry Christmas all,
I got some lovely cookery books (Nigella, Dishoom) and The Last Days of John Lennon by James Patterson from DH which I am both intrigued and amused by. I am a bit of a Beatles fan but not sure about James Patterson.

I am also counting in my book haul two Hazel Holts which the very lovely Bibliomania sent on to me which will be perfect downtime reading over the Christmas break.

Palegreenstars · 25/12/2021 12:55

Ooh I love the Dishoom @BestIsWest - although most things are quite complicated I mainly stick to the snacks!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/12/2021 14:26

Merry Christmas, book pals.

We've not opened presents yet, so I'm not sure if I'll be getting any books, but I haven't asked for any this year, as I've still got a big pile of non-fiction, all half read.

Hope everyone is having a lovely day. I'll keep my opinions about 'women's fiction' and 'chick lit' to myself, just for today. Grin. But everybody is welcome to read and discuss what they want, so long as they don't mind people not holding back if it's not their cup of tea. The fighting is what I'm here for!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/12/2021 14:26

The Dishoom book is a thing of beauty, although I haven't actually made much out of it yet.

bibliomania · 25/12/2021 14:38

I live amongst barbarians, noodle. Barbarians.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 25/12/2021 14:50

Merry Christmas 50 Bookers! I hope you are all able to carve out a little reading time today. I've just unwrapped a couple of books from H, and an Amazon voucher from lovely MIL.

Happy Christmas, 50 bookers. I won't lie, it's been a rough day today, and I for one am very grateful for the genre fiction that is getting me though a very tough year. And it is a real, and very underrated, skill, to write good genre fiction- Agatha Christie, Dick Francis, Georgette Heyer- their works have probably brought more pleasure to more people than most. So today I read 126) Bodies in the Library, a collection of short stories from "the golden age of detective fiction", and 127) Little Darlings by Jacqueline Wilson. Are children's books a genre? This one is definitely a specific genre of children's fiction, although I don't know what it is called (wish fulfillment realism/fairy tale maybe) and it is pretty good too.

TimeforaGandT · 25/12/2021 19:59

@Tanaqui - a reader after my own heart! Agatha Christie, Dick Francis and Georgette Heyer are all regulars and favourites on my book list.

Happy Christmas to you all. I love this thread and reading your reviews which let me know what to try and what to swerve!

Merry Christmas all! Too much of a control freak here for much in the way of Xmas books but I have the second Thursday murder club that I asked for and a couple of lovely book tokens.

LadybirdDaphne · 25/12/2021 22:24

Does anyone know if there is a 12 Days of Kindle or similar sale this year? I can never find the link!

Sadik · 25/12/2021 22:24

Flowers Tanaqui

Two books only here. Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky (DP just asked for my wishlist to pick from!), which is a treat to have in proper paper form not e-book, and Metazoa by Peter Godfrey Smith.

I also treated myself before Christmas to:

  1. Landrace Gardening by Joseph Lofthouse In the spectrum of books read and reviewed on here, this probably falls into the 'rather niche' category Grin It's a short but passionate book about the virtue of farming/gardening with landraces rather than standard crop varieties. Landraces are defined in the book as 'a genetically diverse, promiscuously pollinating and locally adapted crop' - basically a population that is too diverse to be considered a variety. Wonderfully individual and eccentric, I'm definitely going to take on board a lot of Lofthouse's messages.
VikingNorthUtsire · 26/12/2021 06:31

@LadybirdDaphne I woke up this morning with "12 Days of Kindle" bubbling up out of my subconscious mind Grin but I can't see any new deals

LadybirdDaphne · 26/12/2021 07:17

Found them I think! www.amazon.co.uk/s/browse/?node=8517542031&ref=dlx_deals_gd_dcl_img_7_5bdd6fed_mw_sl6_ea&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

Looks like Amazon really didn’t want us to!

Terpsichore · 26/12/2021 08:30

Oh, well done, LadybirdDaphne! I searched fruitlessly yesterday (and also woke up expecting to find them easily). Why do they hide them away? So annoying.

CoteDAzur · 26/12/2021 09:00

Sadik - I would be interested to hear what you think about Shards of Earth. I have it on my Kindle.

CoteDAzur · 26/12/2021 09:03

Remus - "The fighting is what I'm here for!"

I do check back from time to time to see if anyone has read NLMG or Station 11. No luck in recent months but hope springs eternal Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/12/2021 09:05

Cote
We're fighting on the same team with those two, but I always enjoy actually fighting you too. 😂

CoteDAzur · 26/12/2021 09:18

Same here, Remus. You're my all-time favorite literary opponent Grin

CoteDAzur · 26/12/2021 09:19

We should have another go at Nevil Whatshisface soon WinkGrin

CoteDAzur · 26/12/2021 09:21

Christopher McDougall's fantastic book
Born to Run: The hidden tribe, the ultra-runners, and the greatest race the world has never seen is among the 12 Days of Kindle deals Smile
