Modern reference in older book

This is bugging me so much but I expect I’m being spectacularly thick!

I’m reading a book called ‘The Other Hand’ by Chris Cleave. It says inside that it was first published in the UK in 2008. However, one of the characters is talking about watching Tv and mentions Love Island. LI didn’t start until I think
2015/6. Does detail to that level get updated in books in later releases?

I have read online that the book was picked up for a film adaptation so I wondered if it had been re edited? I got it in a charity shop ages ago, pre covid I think?

Love island was on years ago and had celebrities on it before the current format was redone in 2016 or whenever it was.
What you were reading was probably referencing the original version.

Wikipedia tells me the original Love Island was aired in 2006 and 2007, so before the publication of your book.

Are you enjoying it? It's quite gripping, but some of it was a bit graphic. Although I try not to shy away from stuff like that.

I’m not all that far in maybe 100 pages but it’s captured my curiosity.
