It's been bugging me that I can't remember the title of this book, and Googling isn't helping.
It was either upper MG or lower YA - I think the protagonist was between 10 and 13. She was partially sighted and was kidnapped by two men; one of them was nasty but the other seemed to feel guilty and was kind to her. She let them think she was completely blind to get them off their guard and then escaped, or tried to.
I think they kidnapped her to ransom her parents, but I'm not sure. She may have been Black or mixed-race but I'm even more unsure about that part.
This is all I remember. It was probably published in the late 90s.
Any ideas?
