I've read that one - the one about the town planner, I mean. But can't remember what it's called. Will think.....

Sounds like a magic realism type of book . Ok, that's enough clever-dickery for tonight....!

Will google it and see what I come up with.....

MrsMuddle · 16/11/2007 22:04

OK, the one I want the name of is, I think, a short story. A couple live in Malaysia or Borneo. He's a bit of a bastard, and she is a lonely expat wife, and spends a lot of the time exploring the jungle near their house. (Then lots of things happen that I can't remember,) and it ends when they go into the jungle for a picnic or something, and she walks out and leaves him there where he gets devoured by leeches.

Ring any bells?

MrsMuddle, that short story sounds very HH Munro, but I'm not certain. Will look in my collection later.

Website to find books when you input vague memories is:

forums.abebooks.com/abesleuthcom

Boogalooblue · 16/11/2007 22:30

Oh no I clicked on here thinking someone would have put a link on to what sounds like an amazing website but they haven't

Here is one for you which I am not sure you will get, although I would be overjoyed if you did

A 'free spirit' who goes off to fight in the Spanish war (civil?). She leaves her son (Philip) behind in the uk (with her parents?). When she finally returns Philip runs out into the road in delight and is killed.

Bit of a long shot this one, but I would love to find it again, I read it as a teenager (in the 1980s) and have lovely memories of it. I lent it to a college friend who has since died so no chance of retrieving it.

Boogalooblue · 16/11/2007 22:32

Cross Post Feenie, I will give it a go but if anyone knows of the book I have mentioned and can give it a title or author I would be eternally grateful

Feenie · 16/11/2007 22:32

Ahem, have just put on amazing link, Booga!

Oh I have one- please help me, literary ones...t's a book of short stories I read as a child, with a fantasy theme. One of the stories, the only one I can remember any sort of detail about and not just feelings was about a cut out orchard thingy, like you might get on a cereal packet (maybe it was a cereal packet in the story)and it actually became a real orchard at night or at certain times.
At one point I thought it might have been by Joan Aitken, but now I think not.
Any bells for anyone?

CharlesandEddie · 16/11/2007 23:07

rings a bell so bumping for you charlie

LedodgyDickinson · 16/11/2007 23:08

I've got to go to bed now will try again tommorrow if no one has had any luck.

charliegal · 16/11/2007 23:17

Thanks for the bump. The thing has haunted me for years, but you know what it's like when you only have strong feelings about a book you read years ago, rather than any actual detail. I think the cover was red and pink swirls and maybe a horse? Must have read it in 1982 I guess.

Boogalooblue · 17/11/2007 07:50

Oh Charlie I recall reading that book as a youth, afraid I can't remember the title though, I am sure I enjoyed it
