michaelad · 20/11/2007 11:15

Thank you Lucy! I don't think it will sink in until I actually hold the book in my hands at some point in 2009.

Congratulations, that is so wonderful!!!

belgo · 20/11/2007 11:18

that's great! I bet you can't wait to see it published

slim22 · 20/11/2007 11:21

Wooow!!!!!!
That's amazing. Congratulations!
Imagine passing on a book to your kids and grandchildren! You must be really proud.

michaelad · 20/11/2007 11:23

Slim, that is one of the best aspects of all of this. To know that there will be books on our shelf and out there in the world that dh can pass on to our sons. Mind you, they'd probably find it embarrassing and uncool at some point! LOL

vacua · 20/11/2007 11:26

congratulations!

(have a non-fiction book which agent has sent to 4 publishers and it's taking AGES for them to say anything - annoyingly it was COMMISSIONED [but informally] for one list and when first presentable draft was hammered out they asked me to do something completely different. of course am NOT going to, am waiting for decent offer for this one first.)

anyway thanks for passing on some good and hopeful news for all on this side of the industry. will definitely get a copy, have a hardcore fantasy fan in my household (not me) x

michaelad · 20/11/2007 12:30

Vacua, that must be so annoying if they commission one thing and then change their minds and ask for something completely different! Was one of my favourite nightmares before the all important publishing meeting.. Another one of Steve's books has been doing the rounds for 18 months (!!!) now and we've still only heard from one person so far. Not that that matters much anymore now..but I can feel your pain

Congratulations! Can he give up his day job now?

boo64 · 20/11/2007 13:45

Michaelad - wow this is big isn't it! That sounds like a pretty generous advance for a first time novelist so they must have a lot of faith in him!

Vacua- don't give up! We went through a couple of publishers and two agents too before we found someone. In the end we approached a publisher direct and it turned out they are very much the right one for us (I have a co-author hence the 'us').
What is your book about, without giving too much away....just in case it is up my publisher's street.

michaelad · 20/11/2007 13:57

Christina, no..he can't..and he probably never will be able to. Most authors don't make much profit from their books at all. Which is fine, tbh..it's all about the recognition and realising a lifelong dream for dh.

boo, like the press release said, it's Part One in a trilogy with dragons and lots of political intrigue.

Sorry Michaela - I knew what your dh's was about I meant Vacua's book. Cr*p writing here as I confused you!

Mine is a book for expectant parents but I can't really say more than that just now - can probably reveal more in the new year!

I'm very excited about it as there is nothing much out there like it at the moment.

vacua · 20/11/2007 20:16

mine is a bit commercially sensitive at the moment but it falls within the dreaded self help and is pretty much a women-only issue - all 4 currently considering it publish very strongly in that area, am really really pleased with current representation. however it was talked about enthusiastically at london book fair :dancing-on-the-spot emoticon:

what was SO annoying about the commissioning publisher was the comment 'we don't want to exclude the male market' however they have shuffled it along to another list of theirs

trust me, men are NOT going to read this book - a small handful might buy it for a woman in their life and even smaller amount might flick through it but, publisher specifically asked for 'book about x for WOMEN' :stabbing-publisher-with-a-sharp-bit-of-toast emoticon:

My first novel, the one that was published in Sept., was rejected by many agents.

Ditto the second one, which will be published in September next year.

I had been writing for five-and-a-half years when I got my first contract. It takes a long time for most folk--and lots of chocolate and wine.

Nightynight · 21/11/2007 10:12

many congratulations.

I am also trying to get published, need some time to finish my latest re-write and send to agents.

PoinsettiaBouquets · 21/11/2007 12:45

Link please Eliza2!

Utterly brilliant! Well done Mr Michaelad! Keep us posted.

2009? Can't he write any quicker than that? [rolls eyes]

michaelad · 21/11/2007 14:17

Maybe we should ask MNHQ about opening some kind of "library" where every Mumsnetter can plug their book or books of family members since there seem to be quite a few authors on here...
