My lovely 11-year-old niece has just won an English scholarship! I know she's not my daughter but I am beyond proud. I would like to get her a book. Any recommendations for an 11-year-old who loves to read. I'm also going to get her a book diary so that she can record what she has read. Thank you

Do you want a "special" book to keep, a classic or a recent publication?
Any genre?

KindKylie · 26/02/2021 18:55

What does she like?

I've got a lot of inspiration from here -

Doesn't have to be a special book - just want something she will enjoy.

She's liked Ballet Shoes, Noughts and Crosses, The boy at the back of the class. She started Harry Potter but found them increasingly dark. She enjoyed the Percy Jackson books.

Thank you for the link - I will have a look x

My 11 yo is currently working her way through the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. She also has loved When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit and Tom's Midnight Garden. Our 13yo loved the His Dark Materials series at that age, and Inkheart.

My aunt gave me a boxed set of all 8 Anne of Green Gables books for my eleventh birthday and I've been a devoted fan ever since; eleven is a perfect age to start the series since Anne herself is eleven when the books start.

The central character (Will) of The Dark is Rising (Susan Cooper) books turns 11 and comes into his powers. These are absolutely brilliant books, well written and full of Celtic mysticism and were my favourite at that age. There is 5 books in the series.

If you want current the 11 year old girls that I teach have recently loved:

A place called perfect
Rooftoppers
A pinch of magic
The house with chicken legs
The murder most unladylike series
Cogheart

There's also the Phillip Pullman His Dark Materials series (the adaptation has been on BBC recently)

The House on Falling Star Hill.

Seconding the Anne books; and the Emily books also by L M Montgomery. My godmother sent me one every few months from being about 10. They are still my comfort books at 42! Also Anne with an E is on Netflix.

Another vote for Dark is Rising series (although it is quite dark at times)

What about Heather Vogel Frederick‘s Mother Daughter Book Club? Each book is based around the book the club has read but it also follows the 4 girls - my DD has loved reading the book that goes with each one before reading the MDBM book - definitely a series for bookworms!
The first refers to Little Women

Oh or DWJ’s Chrestomanci series for magical but not dark
