Recommendations for books with interesting things to say about motherhood?

My sister's pregnant and I don't get to read much, but I would like to get her a couple of books which are not just on the gynaecological detail of giving birth!
I would love any recommendations from Mumsnet members about any books - actually fiction and non-fiction - which have said something really insightful or interesting or deep about motherhood and what it's really like... Poetry too.

Non fiction Naomi Stadlens' "What Mothers Do" a lovely reassuring book.

Side splittingly funny autobiography type book "Making Babies" by Ann Enright(The Booker lady in lighter vein) I still ache with laughing at the sections about buying buggies, crying and breastfeeding.Well worth it

Agree with both the Kate Mosse and the Anne Enright - both were very good.

Really, LL?

Or are you writing an article soon about this?

The Daily Mail womens section is full of interesting articles about motherhood

I second 'what mothers do'. Also enjoyed the best friends guide to pregnancy and the rough guide to pregnancy. I read obsessively! Wanted new information every single day about this momentous event!

GreenGlassGoblin · 08/11/2007 13:55

I loved Baby Wisdom. It shaped the way I went about motherhood

If you took your professional responsibilities seriously "lilylove" you'd have paid MN the appropriate fee and posted all your requests for us to do your work for you on the Media Requests thread

MMJ - for a second I was about to explode - i thought the book was by Kate Moss.....yes, an expert on motherhood!

Lilylove, please go away and pick on some other suckers for your 'material'. Or fork up for media requests like everyone else.
