I recommended this to my book club after seeing it recommended by a friend of the author's on MN. Half way through I was feeling a bit uncomfortable and responsible and tempted to apologise to the ladies in the club. I feel pretty good about it now that I am finished and would love to discuss it with others that have read it if you are about.

Heheh, that was me that recommended it! Hope they weren't too shocked , what did they all think?
I loved it, don't think I've ever read anything so shocking but PMSL throughout. Thought there was a real Clockwork Orange vibe to it, about taking responsibility for your own actions and reaping what you sow (yeuch, that's bringing unseemly images to mind now.)
Thought Stephen Berkoff would be good as Eddie in a tv version.
BTW the author is such a nice, quiet bloke, never expected all that to come out of his head!

I enjoyed it even though it really made me cringe in parts. We had our meeting last night. We agreed on the 'Clock Work Orange' comparison. One of the women couldn't finish it, which apparently was a first for her. I got the sense that she was mighty pissed off that I had bought it on her behalf at a cost of $32.95. My observation was that it was a man's book. Written by a man, about men with no decent female characters and so perhaps we were not meant to be the audience. One of the women is going to give it to her brother to try out the theory. I congratulate your friend though as he obviously has a hit on his hands and a future as a writer. Maybe he will have the chance to take his time with the next book and come up with a more rounded and believable tale. I will keep an eye out for it.
