I haven’t read properly for a while looking for something uplifting/funny but not frivolous.

I enjoyed A man called Ove and quite like Jonathan Coe but his books aren’t always exactly uplifting.

Would rather avoid chick lit / rom com type.

Any suggestions please?

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.

Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hession is a warm-hearted, very original story. Highly recommended.

I like Fredrick Backman novels too but agree that they're not really in the "uplifting" category Smile

Also loved both of the Amor Towles books I've read.

I quite like Veronica Henry if I need an uplifting book. I've recently read How to Find Love in a Bookshop which should suit your criteria Smile

Definitely both Amor Towles books. Exquisite.

The Caliph's House by Tahir Shah. Wonderfully funny. True story about a family moving to Morocco and renovating a house. A real insight into another culture to UK. Warm, unbelievable at times and so interesting.

The Salt Path. Another extraordinary true story about walking the South West Coast path but so much more than that.

Definitely both Amor Towles books. Exquisite.

I can't wait to see what his next book will be like.

Oh this is the thread for me. I don't like chic lit/holiday reading. I want a decent novel but one that will uplift me.

I have Leonard and Hungry Paul on my wish list at the moment so glad to see that mentioned.
