Has anyone read Property by Valerie Martin?

I've just finished this and have to discuss it with someone!

I thought it was brilliant, but have lots of unanswered questions. Could you actually sympathise with/identify with the narrator? Why did she really want Sarah back (clearly not for her financial value)? Do you think Sarah's baby had really died?

Yes, I read this last year - I found it so intriguing. I didn't sympathise with narrator exactly, but I did care enough to want to find out what happened to her. I think she was a great fictional creation. Has Valerie Martin written anything else recently?

I read this a year ago and tbh have forgotten some of the details. I recall it being v gloomy, though. The narrator wasn't a character who engendered sympathy, I don't think, but I found the concept of merely being property very scary. I thought she wanted to keep Sarah as a link to the past.

I read this ages ago so can't remember too much about it...

Intriguing is a good word for it, Strangetown.

Interesting that you think she wanted to keep Sarah as a link to her past - but the aunt who gave her Sarah is still alive, so does she really need the link? I think she did it partly out of revenge for Sarah beating her to the horse, and partly because she was kind of fascinated by Sarah.

Oh, was the aunt still alive? I'd forgotten that bit. I agree that she was fascinated by Sarah maybe because her life was so different.
