Help me find this book!

I want to find a copy of a children's book I had when I was in my very early teens (late 90s) or possibly earlier...

Compilation of ghost/scary stories - all 'true', all English and all historical.

Stores included:

  • a Victorian (maybe) person being nearly buried alive by accident, checking for breath with a mirror
  • the massacre of the Jews in York, including the suicide of some
  • the puddletown? P something Lane/street haunting - a little girl speaking to the ghost of a murdered person through knocking. Was actually fraud, she had a Woden block in her hand. Feel like that was 1600s era setting... possible that the little girl helped identify the murderer.

It was highly inappropriate and I loved it. It was definitely a children's book!

The cover was a grey photo/image? Of misty ruins/graveyard/church.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

No idea of the book sorry, but could the last story be ‘Scratching Fanny’, the Cock Lane ‘ghost’? I swear I’m not joking Grin 🤣

Might help narrow the search down at least

Yes! That's one of them, the cock lane ghost.

Thanks!
