My son has finally developed a thirst for reading and is ploughing through books. He's not massively fussed by David Walliams and isn't gripped by Roald Dahl yet but he loves David Baddiel - he's read all of them now. Can anyone come up with some suggestions for other authors he might like?

My eight year old son is enjoying ‘The Nothing to see here hotel’ series by Steven Butler. It’s about a hotel a that magical creatures visit and have adventures in, and is told by the boy Frankie who is part troll who lives there with his family.

Brilliant, thank you! Will give them a go!

8 year old daughter here, who says she only likes stories that are funny 🙄. She’s enjoying Terry Pratchett children’s stories, Pamela Butchart, Chris Riddell and Kes Gray (latter two have girl main characters though so not sure if that would put your son off). The How to Train Your Dragon series was devoured last year. Also try Neil Gaiman - Fortunately the Milk and some others.

Oh yes Mr Gum too

Charlie Turns into by Sam Copeland are very funny. I'd say they are better suits to 8-10 as we read them out loud to my son when he was 6.

My son 7 loves Treehouse books and Tom Gates, but they are more a mix of text and pictures.

Anything by Cressida Cowell is fantastic. We also loved Swallows & Amazons and Blyton’s Adventure series.

DS loves Mrs Pepperpot. He also likes Asterix and Calvin and Hobbes and (a couple of newer ones) Zita the Spacegirl and Hilo. Big graphic novel fans here!
