Anyone else reading this? Normally not my cup of tea (I don't do grim) but I spotted it in the library. Anyway, I'm finding it gripping.

Read this recently - it's excellent

I've just finished it. It's not normally my thing, but it's fantastic.

Just found this thread - think I'm one of the few not enjoying it so far. His tertiary/community characters are just not authentic. It's a bit Angela's Ashes meets Rab C so far...

One of the first books I'm planning to read in the NY. I'll get back to you soon ..

Started it yesterday. I’m a bit bored with all the descriptions of female characters’ tits but apart from that it’s pretty good. I feel more engaged with the story of his older brother, Leek, so far but it hasn’t skipped forwards to Shuggie again yet.

I only managed half this book. I found it so so miserable with no real story. The reviews however are making me think I should give it another go. I started it while ill with covid and was feeling miserable myself so it just dragged me down, but maybe I didnt give it a fair go.

Just came on to see if there was a thread about this book.

I started the audiobook last week and am really not loving it.

Quite enjoyed the bit with teenage Shuggie at the start but now it's gone back it just seems depressing, vaguely misogynistic and full of deeply unlikeable and unrelatable characters.

Can anyone recall when it gets back to Shuggie because if it's fairly soon I'll keep plugging away, but otherwise may shelf it for a bit.

I read this at the start of jan. it’s fantastic. Very grim and sad. But I couldn’t put it down and it’s very humorous in some parts.
