Notes on a Scandal-one creepy book!

I just finished notes on a scandal and couldn't put it down. I haven't seen the movie as I hate seeing movies based on books or reading the book after I have seen the movie but it would make one good movie I think. Judy Dench would be so perfect to play the older woman character-she was so pathetic yet so horribly creepy. I worked with a woman like her once so (who used to give me the creeps) so it really rang true.

Christie , me too. I found the book VERY compelling & as you say creepy. Haven't seen the film either but I bet Judy Dench is perfect as the older woman.

Another one to add to the must see list!

lol-you know the one.... the "to do when I have time to myself" list that never gets any shorter??

cracking book
cracking movie

they miss out the whole Sheba and her mother thing though, but Judy Dench is perfect right down to the depiction of her dingy little flat in Archway.

Thanks Suzy!

agreed - loved it.

my mum who - bless her - always sees me as the highbrow reader i was as a teen, rather than the v trashy reader i am now, bought me a set of all the booker shortlisted novels the year this was on it.

couldnt get into half of them (save the excellent vernon god little) but loved notes

forgot there was a film

Hmmmm, maybe I will rent it this weekend. I just kept picturing judy dench through the whole book. I think this is one of those rare cases where both the book and movie are excellent.

Love this book, one you'd read over and over for the bitchiness and catty descriptions. Excellent.

I just read this on holiday (it'd sat on my shelf for years) and enjoyed it too though my one criticism would be that it finished a little too soon. I really wanted to know what happened next - whether Sheba was convicted, whether she'd remain living with Barbara and so on.

But yes - very creepy.

Another vote from me!

I loved the book too. Made me think very hard about not being nasty to people & ending up like her. Loved the description of the boy's bedroom, too - brought back memories of similar bedrooms when I was a teenager in the 70s!

That was a terrific book!

I hated the book.

I liked the way the relationship between the two women developed but for me Sheba's innocence wasn't believable. I didn't understand what she saw in the boy - he wasn't sexy, couldn't be her saviour and didn't really like her.
