I just finished and enjoyed both books:
Dominicana
Girl in translation
In the past I also read (and loved) Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín.
Have you read any other books on this subject you can recommend.

Julia Alvarez: Afterlife (her most recent), and/or How The García Girls Lost Their Accents.

Lisa See: Shanghai Girls.

If you don’t mind nonfiction (a memoir which reads like a novel) Always Another Country by Sisonke Msimang - the author is the daughter of exiled anti-Apartheid activists, born in Zambia and growing up in Kenya, Canada, and the US before she finally goes “home” to South Africa as an adult (post-1994).

Star of the sea Joseph O’Connor is one of my favourite books of all time.
