What can I read??? YA or adult fantasy

IwishIwasyoda · 04/09/2020 09:39

OK, I'm in true escapism mode at the moment but I've read so much fantasy stuff I think I've run out of options. I don't mind YA or adult fantasy but some authors I don't get on with (Terry Pratchett, Terry Brooks).

Below is list of some of the things I've already read -

  • All GoT
  • All LOTR
  • Patrick Rothfuss books
  • Mark Lawrence Red Sister Trilogy and the latest one think it was called 'The Girl and the Stars'
  • All Cassandra Clare books
  • Hollly Black folk of the air trilogy
  • Terry Brooks genesis or Shannara, original Shannara Trilogy and a few more but have got fed up of these as they are always the same plot
  • Neil Gaiman
  • Sarah J Mass - ACOTAR and ToG
  • lots more YA e.g. Rachel Caine Great Library series
  • Pierce Brown - Red Rising series

Please help ... I have loads of books on my Kindle but I don't want to read about serial killers, dystopian universes, family sagas, science fiction, etc etc

I really like M R Forbes.

M R FORBES

Also Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files are a good read.

NoSquirrels · 04/09/2020 09:46

Garth Nix Old Kingdom series for definite if you’ve never read it.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 04/09/2020 09:46

Maggie Stiefvater’s books. The Raven Cycle is great. The Scorpio Races might be my favourite book.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 04/09/2020 09:49

And definitely Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series. It’s brilliant.

I enjoyed his series for younger kids too. The Keys to the Kingdom series, and even The Seventh Tower. I did read them with my DSes but I’d have enjoyed them on my own.

IwishIwasyoda · 04/09/2020 09:51

I tried Garth Nix's Sabriel and hated it. Is the Old Kingdom series better? I've also read The Raven Cycle but not the Scorpio Races so I'll add this.

Sabriel is the first one in the old kingdom series. So you probably want to avoid that one.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 04/09/2020 10:30

I wrote a whole screed and MN ate it.

So I’ll try again.

Charlotte English
Sarah Painter
Emma Bull
Amanda Hemingway/Jan Siegal
P. C Hodgell
Melisa Michaels (probably only available 2nd hand)
Robin McKinley
Patricia McKillop
Lois McMaster Bujold (Curse of Chalion and following)
Diana Wynne Jones (Fire and Hemlock for example).
Ilona Andrews

Twisique · 04/09/2020 10:33

The Assasins Fool and Liveship series are good, by Robin Hobb

SamBeckettsLastLeap · 04/09/2020 10:35

Eragon series, this is dragons so like got
The guardians series by Wendy s

Skade · 04/09/2020 10:35

You need Robin Hobb's various series, but start with the Farseer trilogy. I've read your list as well, your tastes sound identical to mine! Also, Sarah J Maas new book Crescent City is great Grin

Fedupofmagic · 04/09/2020 10:36

Seconding Robin Hobb and new new Sarah J Maas book, Crescent City. I have a severe book hangover from that one

igivein · 04/09/2020 11:14

Discovery of Witches trilogy (Deborah Harkness)

randomsabreuse · 04/09/2020 11:20

Anne McCaffrey
Elizabeth Hunter
Lindsey Buroker

I like Peter F Hamilton but probably more on the dystopian side

Phillip Pullman (only the first 3 so far for me)

Raymond E Feist?

randomsabreuse · 04/09/2020 11:27

Possibly also Tanya Huff

Trudi Canavan (Magician rather than the White series or millennium's rule)

Genevieve Cogman - Invisible Library

Michael G Manning (Illiniel

Have you read any of VE Schwab's series? Worth checking out if not. Also Dhonielle Clayton's The Belles books, quite dark and real behind a world that's something like the Capitol in the Hunger Games. And the Grishaverse series, if you haven't read it already?

ThisBear · 04/09/2020 11:35

Holly Black's Coldest Girl in Coldtown? It leans towards dystopian vampire than magical fantasy, same writing style as Folk of the Air though.

EllieQ · 04/09/2020 11:35

Sarah Rees Brennan - Lynbourn Legacy trilogy (YA)
Lois McMaster Bujold - the Five Gods series (starts with Curse of Chalion), and the Sharing Knife series (her Vorkosigan series is SF)
Melissa Caruso - the Swords and Fire trilogy
Zen Cho - Regency-era Britain where magic exists
Robin Hobb
Robin McKinley
Naomi Novik - the Temeraire series (Napoleonic War with dragons), Uprooted, Spinning Silver

If you like urban fantasy, I’d recommend Ben Aaronovitch (Rivers of London series) and Carrie Vaughn (Kitty Norville series).

VelvetRibbon · 04/09/2020 12:13

David Eddings?

doadeer · 04/09/2020 12:16

The True blood book series is MUCH better than the TV series, I loved the books - I read them again when my son was born and I wanted some escapism during feeds.

IwishIwasyoda · 04/09/2020 14:22

Thanks everyone. Loads I haven't read on the lists

... tried VE Schwab Darker Shade of Magic and it wasn't for me - I couldn't relate to the main character but what about some of the other books??

Meant to say i also like Frances Hardinge and Naomi Novik but have only read uprooted so am off to buy 'spinning silver' now

And I don't mind dystopian fiction recommendations either - I've just overdone it on the zombie front recently ... loved WWZ and also the girl with all the gifts

If you liked the Raven Cycle try Call Down the Hawk - first in her new series that centres around the Lynch boys.

If you don't mind (lots of) sex in your fantasy, try the Charm of Magpies series by KJ Charles (first is The Magpie Lord)

Have you read Naomi Novik's Temeraire books - I really enjoyed the first few though they got samey after a while.

For light fluffy steampunk escapism Gail Carriger is great - start with the Parasol Protectorate series, the first one is Soulless

Bit less fluffy - Emma Newman's Split World books (Between Two Thorns is the first one)

FiveToFour · 07/09/2020 23:14

I have just started listening to Brent Weeks' The Black Prism, and am absolutely loving it.I bought it in a whim and was a bit ho hum about listening as I've found a lot of recommended series a bit of a let down recently, but this has been gripping right from page one!
I think its called The Lightbringer series? Could be wrong though!

ZuluWarrior · 07/09/2020 23:16

B.R. Crichton's books are amazing. Third one coming out soon I believe.
