What can I read??? YA or adult fantasy

IwishIwasyoda · 04/09/2020 09:39

OK, I'm in true escapism mode at the moment but I've read so much fantasy stuff I think I've run out of options. I don't mind YA or adult fantasy but some authors I don't get on with (Terry Pratchett, Terry Brooks).

Below is list of some of the things I've already read -

  • All GoT
  • All LOTR
  • Patrick Rothfuss books
  • Mark Lawrence Red Sister Trilogy and the latest one think it was called 'The Girl and the Stars'
  • All Cassandra Clare books
  • Hollly Black folk of the air trilogy
  • Terry Brooks genesis or Shannara, original Shannara Trilogy and a few more but have got fed up of these as they are always the same plot
  • Neil Gaiman
  • Sarah J Mass - ACOTAR and ToG
  • lots more YA e.g. Rachel Caine Great Library series
  • Pierce Brown - Red Rising series

Please help ... I have loads of books on my Kindle but I don't want to read about serial killers, dystopian universes, family sagas, science fiction, etc etc

Gail Carriger - etiquette and espionage was a brilliant YA series

Nice and gentle (so perfect escapism in a rough patch), amazing language and setting - easily my favourite series in a very long time!

Sunshineskies · 07/09/2020 23:57

I couldn’t get on with A Darker Shade of Magic either but really enjoyed Vicious by VE Schwab. It’s a duology but I haven’t read the second yet.
I enjoyed The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff.

Luckingfovely · 08/09/2020 00:02

I like many of the things you like, the two best series by a country mile are:

Discovery of Witches, Deborah Harkness
Seven Sisters, Lucinda Riley

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 08/09/2020 05:27

I’ve just been reminded of the Sorcery and Cecelia novels. Light as a feather, but charming and funny, if you’re looking for some escapism.

FalconQueen · 08/09/2020 09:11

I have not read this myself yet but I have seen a lot of good reviews for Fortuna Sworn by KJ Sutton. It is often recommended for fans of Sarah J Maas.

I loved the Dark Days series by Alison Goodman. It is paranormal fantasy mixed with regency romance. The Dark Days club is the first book in the series.

More recently I have been reading and loving Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy.

Other fantasy books I have on my to be read list are:
Brandon Sanderson's cosmere books
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
The City of Brass by SA Chakraborty
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden

I have only recently started to read fantasy and I don't want to read anything else at the moment Smile

Agree with the True Blood series being really good. I enjoy everything Charlaine Harris has written.
Also Kelley Armstrong and Ilona Andrews.
Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series and Jim Butcher's Dresden Files.

Benedict Jacka
Ben Aaronovitch

If you liked Holly Black's Folk of the Air, try her White Cat series.

Ellmau · 10/09/2020 15:53

Carrie Vaughn
Jo Walton

Why brandon sanderson mentioned so late!!! He must be one of the best authors in the genre currently and highly productive! Its all great but start with mistborn trilogy. Magic systems are badass!!

Iamnotacerealkiller · 10/09/2020 16:10

Dan wells. I am not a serial killer. Trust me. Just read it...don't read reviews.

Ellmau · 10/09/2020 16:42

For more numinous fantasy~

Patricia McKillip
Guy Gavriel Kay

BiBabbles · 10/09/2020 17:35

Kelley Armstrong - her Otherworld series (urban fantasy) has been part of my comfort reads through this and Age of Legends series (high fantasy) might suit. Her middle grade and YA fantasy books are also well-loved by me and my kids.

TippetyTapWriter · 01/10/2020 16:58

I enjoyed the first two Locke Lamora books by Scott lynch. Though the third wasn’t very good and I think the author is having trouble completing the series.

Robin hobb is a fave. Ursula le guin. Naomi novik - the first of her new series is out now (deadly education). I haven’t read much fantasy in years but the current world situation seems to be driving me toward escapist fiction!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/10/2020 17:09

Anything by Ilona Andrew's. Anything. They are all great.

Particularly the Magic series. And the innkeeper series.

Ridingthegravytrain · 01/10/2020 17:16

The dark tower series by Stephen King

I accidentally started with the second book, and then read the first and thought it was terrible. But all the rest are amazing (apart from wind through the keyhole which isn’t really part of the series so i wouldn’t necessarily bother with it)

So my recommendation would be start with the gunslinger but If you don’t like it just read a synopsis online and move into the rest.

It’s not even a genre I enjoy and I’ve just finished them second time round

TheBlueStocking · 01/10/2020 17:18

Have you read any Tamora Pierce?

TheMShip · 01/10/2020 17:20

Brandon Sanderson for sure! Fourth Stormlight book is out in November. His YA fantasy (Rithmatist) and science fiction (Skyward) also excellent.

Robin Hobb, though I never got on with the Forest Mage books. Sobbed at the end of the final Fitz and Fool.

Brent Weeks Lightbringer series was loads of fun for action and plot, though the younger protagonist is a total Mary Sue IMHO, and all the secondary characters were super shallow.

Guy Gavriel Kay, go all the way to the start and read the Fionavar Tapestry. It's so old now but I still weep every time, for joy and sorrow, you'll know when.

Now I need to go back and make notes on all the other fab recommendations here!

PhilODox · 01/10/2020 17:21

Tad Williams- The Dragonbone Chair trilogy.
Alastair Reynolds Revenger Trilogy

CharlieParley · 01/10/2020 17:49

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. That was one of the most enjoyable, imaginative books I've read in years. It's a little bit overwritten at times, but it's forgiveable. Duology completed with Muse of Nightmares.

The Gift by Alison Croggon is the first of four novels in her Pellinor Saga.

Karen Miller's fantasy books are pretty hard hitting at times, but I thoroughly enjoyed them. No zombies.

Chris Wooding has written an enjoyable steampunk sci-fi fantasy series called Tales of the Ketty Jay which starts with Retribution Falls.

The Queen of the Tearling by Erica Johansen. First in a trilogy often recommended for fans of Sarah J. Mass.

If you like your an entertaining fantasy /romance romp with a good dollop of humour, Katie MacAlister. Perfect escapism.

(If you like science fiction at all, then pretty much everything by Sherri S.Tepper, Julie Czerneda and C.J. Cherryh.)

mightymalties · 01/10/2020 20:16

I loved the Nevernight trilogy by Jay Kristoff.

Look out for The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by Schwab which comes out next week Wink

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/10/2020 21:40

Darynda Jones. First Grave on the right... 13 books I think, all funny and full of action.

10 Ilona Andrews books in the Magic Series. 3 in the Innkeeper series. And there are other series they (husband and wife) have written.

AJ Aalto. Marnie books. Sweary. Hilarious. Action packed.

Currently I'm reading Rachel Caine's Dead Witch Walking series.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/10/2020 21:43

Oh! And I mustn't forget the excellent series of books that my username comes from.

Just One Damned Thing After Another - Jodi Taylor.

DorotheaDiamond · 01/10/2020 21:46

Jenny Wurts Mistwraith series (I think it’s 12 books so far one more to go but she is absolutely amazing at keeping fans updated with sneak peaks...plus it will be out by the time you’ve read the others)

Julian May Saga of the exiles then read intervention then the galactic milieu trilogy (reading order very very important)

Sci fi try Enders game

NEE1302 · 01/10/2020 21:56

Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series is good if you like urban fantasy.
And Samantha Young's True Immortality series is good.
And Josephine Angelini. She's written two YA fantasy series. One based on Greek mythology and the other is broadly about parallel universes. Both brilliant.
