Bone China - spoiler alert

Hi MN readers,

What did people think? I've just finished this and I'm really disappointed! It took me an age to wade through, I just didn't have the motivation to pick it up half the time. I've loved Laura Purcell's other books (to the extent of missing my stop on the train and not really caring) and just felt this was a bit bland and definitely her weakest yet. Interestingly, Purcell herself described it as a monster to write. I thought the opening with Esther/Hester's narrative was interesting then it ran out of steam after that.

I think my main problem is that I didn't really see the point, which is embarrassing for an English grad Blush.

What was the point of the china? I get the 'bug reveal' that when Hester cleans it, it depicts her former employer's fate, but what of it?! Why does Miss Pinecroft sit watching it? Why has Creda filled the house with it?

Is Creeda mad and her insanity has infected the inhabitants of Morvoren, or is she playing on Miss Pinecroft (and in the end) Hester's frailties and fears in order to control the house? I suppose I believe the latter.

I still don't get the significance of the China and the fairies though Blush

Does anyone have any inspired thoughts on this? I really want to think that I'm missing something and to be persuaded that this was a good book!
