Just wondering if anyone else is familiar with this author, I can't believe I've only just heard of her, she has a huge body of work. I looked her up after seeing a reference to her in a David Sedaris book and immediately downloaded her collected short stories, all 600 and odd pages. I'm about half a dozen stories in and enthralled. She's been compared to Alice Munro.

I really like Lorrie Moore. I am not usually a short-stories person but I read the Self-help collection as the idea appealed and really enjoyed the take and the humour.

She's wonderful. As well as the short stories, there are two novels, Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? about an obsessive teenage friendship remembered in middle age, and A Gate at the Stairs, about a girl who becomes a babysitter for a couple in the process of adopting a baby. I thoroughly recommend both.

Yes, I loved Self Help too, and have her Collected Stories but haven't read it yet.

Lydia Davis is another great author in the same vein.

I love Lydia Davis too. And again, even though she's primarily a short (sometimes a very short) story writer, she's also written one brilliant (and very odd) novel.

Lydia Davies you say? Excuse me while I head to Amazon ...
