Has anyone read Dean Koontz?

Well, I know lots of people have, but just wanted to hear from the horses mouth as it were.

Just bought 'Cold Fire' for my Kindle as I thought I'll give him a go, as he one of those authors always so popular and there must be something in it!

I've read a few Steven King and enjoyed them.

I''d be interested in hearing others opinions of him. I'm still going to read the one of got regardless Smile

I have, his early stuff is okay, but then he gets a bit daft. The last Koontz book I read included a scene in which a border collie helps a little boy drive a car. After that I decided his work probably wasn't for me.

It was the random terrorist attack that was most likely caused by "militant atheists" that ruined his writing for me. Militant atheists just write sternly worded novels, ffs.

WhoWants2Know · 21/05/2020 06:46

The Watchers was ok.

Orangecake123 · 21/05/2020 14:18

Eyes of Darkness was the last one I tried. It was also an okay read.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/05/2020 17:57

Not a patch on King. A couple of them have been mildly diverting, but they are very samey and I wouldn't rush to read another.

ShirleyB25 · 21/05/2020 18:56

Thanks for the heads up everyone - I think I'll read this one I've got, but maybe not be rushing out to get any more.

I tried a Clive Cussler one as well - a bit like James Bond of the Navy - and it all got a bit too technical for me Confused even though I don't mind channelling my inner geek when needed.

His rewrite of Demon Seed was utter crap.

Hi

I read a lot of Dean's earlier books when he wrote as Leigh Nicholls and I really enjoyed them. I must admit that Cold Fire was not one of my favourites, although it started off very well.

I would highly recommend reading

Watchers
Lightning
Strangers

Especially the last two. I won't put what they are about in case of spoilers (you could probably find out anyway!) but they are well worth a read.

If anyone wants anymore info or a review I would be happy to post.

I was a big fan when I was younger and I reread a couple of his books last year. I remember really enjoying Dark rivers of the heart but on second reading felt it was unimpressive.

I did enjoy From the corner of his eye a second time though and would recommend that one. I also like the Frankenstein series

MamaBearThius · 23/05/2020 06:37

Massive massive Koontz fan here! Tick tock is my top favourite, followed by the Odd Thomas series! And the Good Guy.

PixieN · 23/05/2020 06:38

I couldn’t put ‘Intensity’ down and would reread that one. Watchers was also very good. Ticktock was a bonkers one, but had me laughing out load.

PixieN · 23/05/2020 06:38

loud

MamaBearThius · 23/05/2020 06:40

Oh Velocity too is one I've read a hundred times, and False Memory is so clever! You've inspired me to get reading again!

exLtEveDallas · 23/05/2020 06:47

I really rate Koontz, mainly his earlier stuff though. Absolutely love the 2 Christopher Snow books, Fear Nothing and Seize the Night. I think I’ve been waiting for the final book for about 20 years!

I quite enjoy his books that have a super intelligent dog running through them - especially when they don’t seem to be crucial to the story! He’s obviously a dog person.

If you like King/Koontz you might enjoy John Connolly’s Charlie Parker series. I think Connolly is a great writer and he’s the only one that I pre-order books from - everyone else I wait for paperbacks/offers but with Connolly I’ll pay full price!

Ilovethewild · 23/05/2020 07:02

I read all his early books (and still have them) and got into Clive cussler- kootnz did get samee, so near that in mind. I love a Clive cussler, great adventures. I’m also a Reacher fan and Steven king fan. Should read more! Enjoy Op...

Looks like there are some free on Prime Reading, I will try one I think as reading much more now.

BeyondMyWits · 23/05/2020 07:50

Night Chills was his best for me. Whispers and Strangers were good too, but after the 80s it all got a bit weird and samey.

ShirleyB25 · 24/05/2020 11:44

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I like many of his books.

Apart from the one where the magic golden retriever (who hadn't been particularly magic prior to this) cried magic tears on someone and reversed death. Magical restorative dog tears had not been a part of the story at any point prior to that.

He seems to have got a bit silly about dogs of late... But his earlier stuff is good.
