I’ve had this book on my “want to read” wish list for ages and it’s one of today’s kindle daily deals!
So thought I would share with you....

Brilliant just bought it now. Had forgotten I'd wanted to read this, thanks!

I read it last year. It does seem to be a bit of a marmite book. I'm in the "didn't like it" camp. I thought it overrated, under-researched and there were some historical inaccuracies. It seemed very much written from an American pov (a seeming lack of understanding about food shortages, poverty, etc) rather than portraying how life was actually lived in occupied Europe during the war.

I was quite disappointed and thought there were better books written about the war than this.

Just my opinion, and there are plenty more readers who loved it than hated it.

I agree with you Vitacease, felt like it wanted to be the book thief but nowhere near as good. However I think we're very much in the minority as everyone else I know loved it

I loved it and thought it was beautifully written and was about a thousand times better than the book Thief (which was like a novel written to introduce 13 year olds to WW2).

I didn’t like it. I didn’t think it was bad - there was one strand of the story that I really liked - but I felt it was over-contrived. I was in the minority in my book group, though.

Another fan, intelligently & evocatively written. I was glad the author (who’s name escapes me!) didn’t cop out on the bittersweet ending.

dementedma · 05/05/2020 17:45

I loved it. Better than The Book Thief

AnnaNimmity · 05/05/2020 17:48

love this book

I read it a few years ago, but it was definitely one of my books of the year.

Didn't do much for me at all. My mum loved it and raved about it too me. I couldn't tell you anything about it really the only thing I remember was it was set in France and there was a little girl and an old man in it. Some other books really stay with me for ages but this just passed me by. I really wanted to love it but for reason I just couldn't. I enjoyed it when I read it but think I was trying so hard to find something that wasn't there for me I felt let down by it.
